Unless it is high in the mountain or remote jungle / forest at night / early morning, I have never experienced 7-8 degree C :(...

I've been living in Laos for eight years and coming here since 2003. Seven to eight deg C temps at night are common in Vientiane in winter. Average daily temps around 24-26 deg C. Vientiane is around 170 metres above sea level, sits on a river plain and is almost as flat as a billiard table.

I grew up in SEA and have lived in several countries around SEA and in general, have never encountered temp as low as you had mentioned unless I am in the mountain at night or early in the am. Not familiar with Vientiane and based on your description, at 170 meters above sea level, it is relatively higher elevation and thus will have a cooler temp at night or early in the am.

As the OP has not mentioned where he is going to visit, it is not possible for any of us to give him a specific info re. climate.

I don't get why you would want to take a big DSLR and big lenses. Odds are, you will wish you'd packed much lighter and not taken as much gear because you end up not using it. If I were you, I'd rent a Sony A6000 and two lenses and call it a day. You will have an extremely light kit that won't bog you down and will deliver fantastic images. Heck, buy the camera body and rent the lenses. Either way, your back and shoulders will thank you.

Personally I would go with a 6d due to gps, which i find quite useful when I was backpacking in europe last year. I only bought a 6d+2470. But I were to do it again, I would go with a 6d+16-35+2x extender. At the end of the day it comes down to your shooting style

You're going to backpack around SEA and you want to bring all that on top of your personal belongings? You're crazy.

SEA is very hot and humid. Even if you carry nothing, you'll sweat buckets. Keep what you need to carry to a minimum. Personally, I would only take one lens: a standard zoom, and enjoy the trip.

I agree with this. I live in Cambodia and it is not a place to be dragging around to much gear. Most of my stuff is done with a 24-105 f4 and an 85mm f1.8. You try to carry to much and you will suffer from the heat and it will take away from your enjoyment of the place.

Use Canon 10D, 40D, 1D Mk1, 2 & Mk4 plus a 1Ds and 5D Mk2. Canon lenses (fav 24-105 f4L). Nikon D2HS and Fuji X Pro 1 & 2. Love um all

Only you can decide how much gear you are comfortable carrying or being without and wishing you had it with you.

I've been to SEA a few times and always carried a DSLR (30D or 5D3) and 3 lenses ( a wide angle, 24-70 f2.8 and a 70-200 f4 IS) and a light tripod. I always carried the minimum each day. Whatever lens I didn't need that day would stay in the hotel/hostel locked in my luggage. Only used my tripod early morning or late evening so never carried it during the day.
For me the 100-400 is a heavy lens. I prefer the 70-200 f4 as it is much lighter - I also carry a light 1.4 extender.
Here is what I've captured in the last 10 years of travels:

What you are willing to carry may differ. I've no idea how strong you are, what your tolerance for discomfort is. I personally don't mind heavy gear as I consider it a workout. I do my shooting mainly in the morning before the wife wakes up and don't carry my gear during the midday as the light is harsh.
