When I had my 350D I upgraded the kits lens and picked up a Sigma 17-70mm to replace it. Generally I was quite happy with the results that I had with it as it was an improvement on the original kit lens.
I now have a 7D2 and have still been using the Sigma as my walkabout lens. The images are still good, though I am still not getting them all due to still learning the AF system on the 7D2, but there are times when possibly I could do with a fraction more reach - without having to keep swopping to my 70-200L lens.
So I am wondering about changing the Sigma out, possibly for something that will still be my workhouse lens but that has a little more at the top. If need be I could then maybe get something else to cover the lower ranges and wider views. I tend to take landscape, architectural scenes ( inside and outside ) and, due to gaining extended family, more portrait/group pictures.

I have wondered if there was a Canon L lens that would cover the workhouse angle more but I'm open to looking at others as well - same goes for the wider lens - though my first look is for the workhorse lens.
Any suggestions would be welcome, especially as I have a mystery weekend that has been arranged away coming up. So I could then hire a lens for that weekend to compare against the Sigma.

Canon 18-135, while not L, comes to mind, but this may have been your original kit lens you swapped for Sigma :) Without knowing your requirements and style/subject of shooting, it is hard to recommend anything.

Tamron 18-270? I have read nothing but praise for it.
Sigma 18-200?

The Canon EF-S 18-135mm STM is probably your best option if you are looking for more reach in a walk around lens over your existing Sigma 17-70mm. You will lose a lot on the wide end with any Canon L lens, such as the 24-105L, as those are designed with focal lengths more fitting full frame bodies.

do you need the faster aperture of the 17-70mm?...going to the 24-105L would keep it at f4, so you'd only miss out on the shorter end faster aperture...if aperture isn't much of a concern than the 18-135STM would be a good choice...with the 24-105L you'd probably want to add an UWA lens, which you could still actually do with the 18-135STM

Others have already suggested the 18-135mm STM. It enjoys a good reputation here at POTN. Alternatively get the 18-55mm STM, which is a bit sharper, plus the 55-250mm STM to stretch your range.

If you need speed, then maybe the 17-55/2.8, but it has AF inconsistency at longer distances. It would be best indoors.

Whichever lens you get, put it through trials to make sure it is OK for your purposes, and return it within the return period if it is not.

You asked for an "L" recommendation, but it doesn't exist. The 24-105 is the only one that's close. You could add an EF-S 10-22 for the wide end. For a single lens solution, I really like the EF-S 15-85. That has a nice wide end, and the 85 end gives more reach than the 70 you currently have. My wife, however, prefers the EF-S 18-135 STM. We get excellent results from both lenses.

Image editing ok; C&C always welcome.

Canon doesn't make a L lens in EF-S mount and thats what you need for a walkaround lens on a crop body.

I agree. If walk about means versatility in terms of reach, then the 18-135 STM is the one to go for. If I am out and about mostly outside, this is my go to lens.

The biggest weakness with this lens for my shooting is that i wished it was a bit faster for indoors lower light shooting. So I generally swap to a Sigma 18-35.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions and gives me some options. The faster aperture at the lower end isn't so crucial for me.
As said by Archibald I was looking to put any considered through trials, as I have a company close to my work that hires out lenses. So gives me a very good excuse for getting out and about at the weekends to put them through their paces.

Now to go and do some research and pick one out to try first

Appreciate you all taking the time to comment :-D

Another vote for the 18-135mm STM. I bought one for shooting video but found it really good for stills also.

I used my 17-55mm 2.8 as a walk around lens for a while but the range is just to limited for me. I use it for wedding duty now and bought a 18-135mm STM. It's light, sharp, quick focusing, has a very good range, and is a bargain if you shop the used market.

Further to update, it does seem that the 18-135mm is the favoured suggestion at the moment and so that is the one I will give a look to first of all. I have looked at the lens preview thread for it and there are some nice images there which make me keen to try.
Thanks for the help everyone !

Late to post, but I picked up the 18-135 with my 7d2. Found that I'm very happy with it and it is the lens that lives on the camera. Several others I use, but it is the most flexible.

Does the STM focus as fast as USM? I have a 24-105L. It focuses way faster than the 18-135.

I used to have the 17-70 OS, and it was an excellent lens. I would have kept it, but I moved to full frame. It is f/2.8 - 4, so is faster at the wide end than the 18-135. Only if you want something much longer that 70mm would I replace it with another midrange zoom.
