Thanks gents; appreciate the comments.

I tried many times to make a single shot work, but I dont think it's possible. Even when it's rising before sunset, the moon's much brighter than anything else (and getting brighter by the second).

There should be a 'moonshot' setting in camera, which automatically exposes for brightest, and darkest, and shoots twice; sortof like an HDR, but only the extreme ends :)

Freddy ..

Freddy ..

What helped you most was your location since the moon reflected light on the water it also help light up the trees somewhat . But yes the moon is very hard to capture this was . I have done similar to this capture once before and it certainly brings out a new look into the overall image . I have never tried but I wonder if AEB bracketing mode would work at this time of evening like you mentioned with HDR ? It might be interesting to try .

I have tried AEB before (and this time as well), but futzing around with the 5D3 + 400 5.6L on a tripod making adjustments all the time and then using a timer to shoot (my remote was out of commission that day) along with a quickly ascending moon makes it really difficult. And then you have to start thinking about ISOs as well.

This is such an annoying problem .. as the moon rises, the dynamic range just gets more an more outta whack and eventually it is too much for even AEB to accomodate :)

I think I even tried a -5 0 +5 this time - to no avail; again, making quick changes in a quickly changing lit scene (going from meh to worse), armed with a 400mm is not ideal for experimentation.

I like this location I've found, so next full moon shoot, I'll just take the two or three I need, and they play a bit ... plus, my remote is functional now - so let's see what happens :)
