Review of the TrekPak inserts for the Pelican 1510 Pictures to come later.
The Pelican cases, and specifically the 1510 case has come be a staple in storage, traveling, and security of photographers camera gear. Rugged, waterproof, fits in airline overhead, etc. But the storage system inside is always up for debate. I went a route that I very much enjoy….TrekPak inserts.
What am I using this for?
Mostly longer term storage of my gear in the basement. Or using the pelican as transportation to a bike race or on the boat, where I can select and pick my gear as needed.
Why not use the supplied Pelican Pads?
I have only one problem with Velcro, the noise and hassle of taking them out. I find it noisy, cumbersome, and annoyed that often gear has to be taken out just to move the pad over a half inch.
Construction of the TrekPak?
8/10 It truly is a simple design, and not much more than corrugated plastic with dense foam applied. The foam is very durable, and snugs the equipment with the supplied all metal U-pins being inserted into the plastic openings. Supplied stitched fabric is used as pulls to help remove the pins…much easier than Velcro dividers.
How did I buy?
I bought the Pelican 1510 without foam as a way to save money on the case. The TrekPak comes with upper and lower pads, as well as the outside surround and dividers. Truly a full kit.
What would I do differently?
I would buy an extra or two long pieces from TrekPaks website. The only gripe I have is that I could use more dividers for future divisions or modifying. The dividers are easily cut with a utility knife, by buying two long dividers, I know I can always change and adapt in the future. It is an extra $20 but well worth it to me.
Overall Satisfaction?
8/10 This is a very nice buy, especially if done where a blank Pelican is bought without foam, and the TrekPak as a complete kit. The high(ish)price and factoring in another divider needed, I would give this a 8/10. Compared to the Velcro dividers which I would give a 4/10.
