I like it a lot. Sure it is big and heavy but the photos it produces are crisp. The VR also helps in the low light situations so I dont have to raise ISO as much. I have not had to bring out my tripod as much to get the shots I want.

Based off Lens Rentals MTF testing it's not quite as sharp in the centre but is sharper out to the edges. I can't give you any more on colour rendition, out of focus transition, etc though I'm sorry

It's sharper than the Canon in the area that matters most IMO, about a third off center, then gets progressively better towards the edges. This means it's the sharper lens for anyone that doesn't shoot with their subject right in the center of the frame, which would be the case for most of us using a 24-70.

I think Nikon really did the right thing with the new 24-70VR and built a lens where the resolution is optimized for the correct part of the frame, instead of just trying to keep the measurebators happy.

Great point and I agree. The only time I shoot center frame is when I shoot food photography on a tripod but even so I could easily shoot off center. But when it comes to portraits or urban shots in nearly always shooting off center.
