Teleconverter ...expectations too high??

Can't use my computer as its in the bedroom and my wife's gone to bed...
But I will get some photos on here tomorrow so you can see what I'm worried about...

teleconverters are a compromise. I don't like them or use them anymore. sure, in great light they work okay but usually not so much in the conditions I shoot

I get reasonably good IQ from my 70-200 f2.8 IS II/1.4xIII combo. I have not done any MFA.
I usually don't use the pair since I have the 300 f2.8 IS II, which offers 20mm more reach and superb IQ.

These are 100% crops: 6D, 100-400L, Kenko 1.4x DGX, f/8, 1/500, ISO 400. They are both hand-held, wide-open, and manually focused. I am happy with this level of performance. Is this good, or are my standards lower than most folks'?

yep thats good imho - id be happy with that at a distance and at 560mm

First image is with no lens correction and the second image is with +11 micro adjustment..
I shot at f5.6 for a narrow depth of field to show up any issues more clearly..

I use my 1.4 MkIII teleconverter all the time with my 6d/ 70-200 MKII lens and there's very little difference in IQ and focus speed most of the time.I say most of the time because occasionally I do see what looks like a shot taken through too many pieces of glass.Make sure all your lenses are clean!!

It would help if your examples weren't so strongly backlit and high contrast. Aim it at something that has a full range of tones and detail across the frame. Test it under normal circumstances before you do extremes.

I'm fairly pleased with the 7D2/100-400ii/1.4X III combo..... as long as I don't try to photograph a bird in the distance. I find those images a bit fuzzy........ but it could just be the high humidity affecting the shot.

I would have thought a bird with sky as a background was quite a normal subject personally.. And I would hope that a bit of kit costing in excess of £300 would have the ability to cope with different situations....

It might be a normal subject for your shooting, but it's far from normal for evaluating lens performance. There is little or no detail across the frame. The bulk of the subject is in shadow and underexposed. Testing the lens should be done in reasonable light, with a subject that has fine detail. If it fails in good conditions then you know you have an issue separate from the difficult shooting conditions.

Have printed out a proper test chart ,set everything up nice and straight and squaresquare and tested my lens...
70_200 on its own needed +5 adjustment and the lens and 1.4x combo needed +11 adjustment..
I have taken a couple of simple test shots indoors and the difference is very obvious even to my eyes..
Don't know how we managed before cameras with AFMA came along, if I had not been able to do adjustments I would not have used the 1.4x...now I am very happy with the image quality...
