First time coming across one of these beasts. It was sitting on the back deck rail with a nice fat bald faced hornet meal. I had to scramble to remove my tubes ;) It only allowed a couple of quick shots before it took off... I really wanted to get a few more angles.

Wow, amazing shots Travis. Looking at your images, using about the same setup as I do, you certainly give me a goal to work towards.

In my experience with robber flies, they usually land quickly in the same vicinity (maybe a 10' radius), especially if they're feeding. Did you look around for it again?

Thanks! It's really just a matter of practicing and fiddling with the diffusion :)

Thanks Moose. I did look around a bit, but the wife was calling me in for supper ;)

Nice capture Travis, I think that is a Promachus hinei, if you like having the species to name your pics.
