Any state that has mostly evergreen trees. Michigan is gorgeous except during the awkward fall and spring phase where everything is dead but also has no snow and it is melty and muddy. Of course, if you are creative, you can make that look pretty cool in PP!

the one with the most mountains.

Without mountaineering, that is.

I'm more interested in things like windmills, dirt roads, waterfalls, churches, lighthouses, ponds, forests, streams, trains, trees, farms, ruins, marinas, boats, bridges, barns, etc.

not just nature sterile of human dwelling.

You pretty much just described West Michigan. Come in late summer and fall. Spring is good at windmill island in holland. Plenty of light houses along the shore plus grand haven, saugatuck, holland, are all great beaches and towns. Get ahold of me and I will show ya around! I even have the hook up with the farms! My county (Ottawa county) has the largest parks department budget in the nation (for county) and has 38 parks!

Based on random Google images, Michigan looks more icy than snowy in the winter.

That depends on the day. Winter is very unpredictable in the Northeast. And the piers on the lake get covered in ice. Water does freeze on the lake in winter ;-)a New England states had a horrible winter. Id rather not have snow 8 ft high at my front door! lol....You asked for seasons. Seasons up here are unpredictable and inconsistent year to year.
