Radio controlled Model Aircraft Flight Demonstration, or at least that's what the West Michigan Aerobats call it. I've never witnessed this show so I wanted to make sure I used the correct terminology.

So, the story is.... There was a local Rust n Dust Steam & Gas Show. You know, antique tractors, tractor pulls, radio controlled planes, etc. This was there first year doing it and they contacted me. I shot in exchange for some local advertising. The "you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours" deal.

I was very impressed with the air show! I had no idea what the show was going to be and did not know what to expect so I had a difficult time predicting the movement.

ANYWAY, here are a few of my favorites. I shot in JPEG and did zero editing to these.

The rest of the air show pics and the Rust n Dust pics can be found here >>> https://www.facebook.com …96.379285572203184&type=3 (external link)

These posts bring back memories. Back when I flying R/C 20 years or so ago, we had a flying lawn mower and would put on the same act of the lawn mower getting away when we had a fly-in. I, myself, had a flying Porsche.

I was surprised that it even flew! Apparently aerodynamics aren't as important if you have enough power!

Actually, it is one huge wing with just some sides attached to make it look like a lawnmower.

O I get that. It just doesn't appear aerodynamic because it looks so bulky (or it doesn't to me anyway). But the motor is powerful enough for it. Doesn't seem like it should fly because it looks so heavy compared to the size of the motor. They said they used some lightweight foam insulation and some various lightweight construction materials. There were some very odd shapes for sure! They said they don't use balsa wood anymore and most of their planes are made from random materials or from a kit.

It's been a long time but my flying Porshe was mainly foam core with a very thin (and I mean thin) layer of balsa would attached to the foam with contact cement. Then very low heat covering was ironed on to the balsa wood. It wasn't too heavy until I had to try to get the center of gravity right. I had to add a ton of lead to the front to get it balanced.

It flew pretty well but you didn't do much aerobatics with it.
