Is this filter worth the money?

So, I live in a pretty bad part of the UK for light pollution. People have said filters such as these:

really help. Are they worth the investment? Ideally the "best" places for me are a 2 hour drive away...which although do-able, they still can suffer "some" light pollution from the cities around 50km away...

I personally have not tried these. I would be very interested in knowing if these work also.

The engineer in me says that if they are blocking the visible and UV spectrum, then I won't get pictures of the stars and the night sky as I see it. However, whatever I see as "red-ish" and what I can't see (infrared levels) would show up quite nicely with this filter.

The only issue is how much of that "light pollution" is truly visible light and how much is in that very same near-IR / IR range. If it is incandescent type, then it will almost all be near-IR levels while newer LED-based might not show up in that near-IR levels.

Well no, this filter has 90% + Transmittance (basically 90% see through) in quite a large portion of the visible...
There are troughs where the filter has been designed to block the known wavelengths where most light pollution sits.
Like the sharp drop in T just under 600nm for the sodium lamps.

I was going to say for that small price it would be worth trying one out

looking forward to your reports on its effectiveness
maybe post 2 pix one with out and one with filter for a comparison (and don't edit the pix)

Looking at that scope...it seems yiu may know a bit about the subject.

But here is a shot without the filter to give you the idea of the scale of LP here...this is a site 30mins away which is the best site before maybe having to travel 2-3 hours ha...

So the first image is SOOC without filter, and the second is SOOC with the filter in place?

Slightly off topic, but what lens were you using? Even at 30 seconds, objects in the center show no trails. I see some trailing at the edges, but are those trails, or coma?

Hi sorry, the images just show what I have with no filter.
The first is SOOC and the second is after I have played with it in Photoshop.

I honestly wish I could fix this stretch stuff in the corners...I feel it may by "croma"...I have this issue with a sigma 24mm f1.8 and also my canon 35mm f2. Any help to stop it/reduce it would be awesome.

By the way, the filter arrived this morning...but there is thick cloud all weekend here now .

On the 35 f/2 IS, the coma is gone by f/4 per reviews I've seen.

I don't know about the 24mm Sigma.

I have a Rokinon 14/2.8 which supposedly has one of the least coma of all off the shelf lenses out there.

Since I don't do a lot of astro, I'm sorry I can't help you reduce this effect you're seeing.

I just recently go interested after I found out the galactic bulge was visible quite well right from my back door.

I was up this morning at 4:00 to see if I could catch the Perseids, but that was a waste of time.

I am thinking I will go out tonight or this weekend to see if I can get the galactic bulge again (if there's no clouds ... this is Kentucky) since the moon is new.

I just don't have time to go to dark skies; the closest to me is 3 hours away, and I was thinking a filter might not alleviate the issue, but reduce the yellow.

That is not a crop. It was a huge meteor! Honestly, it was almost scary.
