Is anyone using the alternate domain designations of .photo or .photography for their websites? I have a domain in mind and of course it is already used as a .com, but those alternate extensions are open. I am just not sure that the use of those is a good deal being "non traditional" extensions. What are the thought of folks here?

In 1990 .".com" wasn't traditional, now the damn extension is ubiquitous. :-)

Absolutely. Don't use it personally just mainly because I have the .com but using .photo wouldn't be a big deal to me.

If you're putting it on paper, would suggest putting http:// in front of the domain just to let people know it's a URL.

Definitely prefer .photo over .photography though since it's shorter.

Thanks for the input guys, having been around for quite some time (cough old SOB cough) and seeing the evolution of the interwebs I was concerned about how not being associated with the traditional domain extension would be perceived. I know how being linked to things are important, American Airlines spent big buck years ago to have their corporate telephone numbers reflect the 214 area code because they wanted to be known as a Dallas based company even though their headquarters was in Tarrant county and should have had an area code of 817. But having a couple of kids in their 20's I should have realized that the way the young-uns view things are not like us old codgers view them.

Haha well, if your goal is to reach the young-uns, you need to be doing the whole Instagram/Snapchat/Tumblr/Facebook/Twitter/etc.

It would be certainly a good idea to secure such domain and then just wait, till it gets more common. At this point, though, it would just confuse people.

I agree, I would probably want to put a ".com" after "name.photo" because it feels incomplete to me, just because ive never seen a domain used like that before. But im sure they cant be too expensive to secure like someone else has suggested above.

I own the following domains for my business.

.com
.com.au
.net
.net.au
.co.uk
.photo
.photos
.photography

Brand control is important. I actually use .net as the site and all the others redirect to it.

no-one in their right mind enjoys typing long URL's...

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

completely agree. most important thing is to think about user end of things. that's why I made my business site with 5-ish categories, although I could have made at least 20 and look ūber professional.

20 is not so much uber professional as lacking focus.

I am in the process of changing my URL and I've been contemplating a .photo site but am having a hard time 1) finding one I can afford and 2) one i can also afford to purchase the rest as memoriesoftomorrow did.

I'm commenting on your previous comment. Just adding to what you said: often, it's better to have less than more. 20 doesn't mean more professional, just less focused (which generally makes less money).
