Are the SterlingTek BP511 equivalents (external link)the same size as the Canon version? I'm using the BG-E2 and want to make sure that its OK to have the Canon battery and the SterlingTek battery side-by-side in the grip.

They're the same size. However, some people have reported anomalous battery discharge when mixing batteries of different capacities. 20D battery life is good enough that you really have to shoot a lot, non-stop to not be able to change batteries, and you don't need to use 2 in the grip.

Jon,

Thanks for the heads up.

I guess I'll keep the extra one in the bag and switch them when needed.

I use two SterlingTek (external link)batteries in the grip and the original Canon battery in the camera when the grip is off (not very often).

Sterling Tek has the NB-2L. Are they the same as the NB-2LH for the REBEL XT ?

Thanks

I just called Sterling Tek and they said YES the NB-2L is compatible with the REBEL XT. By the way I have to say great customer service, I called the toll free number and after 2 rings a human answered the phone and resolved my problem in less than a minute.

As you found the Sterlingtec folks are great. I have two batteries labeled For NB2L Replacement and have used them since July 2005. They are rated at 7.4V and 1500mAh as opposed to the Canon NB-2LH (E160814) rated at 7.4V and 720mAh.

As I noted above I have always used the non-Canon batteries in the grip figuring if they leaked or had a problem that would reduce the chances of damaging the camera. I am over that now but still reserve the Canon battery for in-camera use.

There has been some discussion on mixing different mAh rated batteries in the grip and not being a batteryologist and keeping them together is easy I just follow that practice. (I hope that was confusing enough. :) )

Tom

my 20D batteries from them work in the canon charger. so long as they are the same voltage and type (ie LithIon) It shouldn't make a difference from from an electrical standpoint. so long as the pinouts are the same :-)

Sorry to hijack this thread, but I've just had an email from 7dayshop in the UK, saying that they are selling their bp511 in a TWINPACK for £9.99. If these are the same as the ones I got last year, they are pretty good batts.

I'm not familiar with these batteries but a while ago I bought a couple of cheap 3d party BP511 compatible batteries that weren't quite the right size and in fact were so tight in the battery compartment that they had to be pried out. Don't remember the brand but they were silver in colour.

The StirlingTek battries are great - no problems at all, work fine in the Canon charger, and fit the camera the way they should.
the other thing is that StirlingTek's customer service is unbeatable, they are really nice people.
There is a sticky on the accessories page that talks about third party batteries, and stirling Tek are pretty much all anyone talks about.
