After 1 full week of digging around in POTN, I finally be able to narrow down my potential 1st lens for α7MII:
  • SEL55F18Z
  • SEL35F28Z
  • SEL28F20

For those that have the opportunity of using them, can you please share your opinion?

From dpreview/dxomark, it seems that optically the order are as follow (best to worst):

  1. SEL55F18Z
  2. SEL28F20 (even this is not Zeiss branded glass)
  3. SEL35F28Z

My style of photography: portrait, group photos, food photography, street, indoor wedding/birthday party (so basically very general style of photography).

I have the 35F28z, but also want to pair it with the 55mm.
The 35mm + a7r is an amazing walk around combo. It's tremendously small and it's crazy sharp. It's minimum focus distance is not that great and it's bokeh isn't spectacular.
Also, it's a bit of an odd focal length for me. I prefer the 28mm contax in terms of focal length, but I'm getting used to the 35mm.

That being said, I tested the 35 and my dad's older summilux and the zeiss blows the summilux out of the water.

IMO this is a completely subjective question. All 3 lenses are great performers, all 3 are similiar in size and weight (with the 35mm being a bit smaller and lighter), yet all 3 are very different focal lengths.

What FL do you find favorable on your current camera? Most people either prefer 35mm or 50mm as their "standard" lens, few like using both, even fewer prefer to use a 28mm as their main lens. Personally I prefer 28mm and 50mm over 35mm most of the time, but I feel as though I'm in the minority there. The best way to find out would be to use each FL for a good portion of time with your current kit, if you have a standard zoom limit yourself to using it at only 28mm, 35mm and 55mm (or their equivalents).

My original candidates were 55 and 35.

You were the one that suggested 28 maybe another candidate to consider to; and from the research, you were right; even this lens isn't branded Zeiss, it fares quite well with the other two.

Quick question, is there a lot of distortion with your 28?

It's a 28mm, but there is a bit of distortion, yes. Personally I'm not bothered by distortion, I think lens imperfections like distortion and vignette can often add to an image, and if you need to you can correct it with the click of a button in LR.

Check out my flickr for examples taken with the 28mm, I have lots, it's one of my favorite lenses ;)

Like lucas says its a very personal decision. Personaly I'm going for the 28/55 combo even though I consider myself a 35mm guy. I owned the FE55 previously when I had my last sony and it was outstanding. I am.repurchasing for the A7Rii. I've also owned Canon 50 1.8 mk1, 1.8 mk2, 50 1.4 and 50L and the FE 55 blows them all out the water, seriously that good. It doesn't do f/1.2 obviously but hey ho.

I felt the 35 was too close to the 55 so purchased the 28 instead (and the batis 85).
