Is there a reasonably priced option to connect the 7D II to a wifi network? I like it to be able to transfer the frames that I like from the 6D to the iPhone or iPad right in the field, and so I would like to be able to do the same from the 7D II.

I know of CamRanger and a similar Canon product, but they go into hundreds of $$. Is Eyefi the only reasonable product?

There are both DSLR Controller (external link) and qDslrDashboard (external link). Both can use the same TP-Link MR3040 which is the basis of CamRanger's hardware. DSLR Controller costs about $9-10 for the Android client and there's a free version for jailbroken iPads; qDslrDashboard is free for Windows, Mac and Android clients (iOS costs around $10 in the Apple store). Both vendors make the router firmware (different versions for each one) available for free. I've used them both; qDslrDashboard supports Canon, Nikon and Pentax; DSLR Controller only supports Canon, but that's what I tend to use most of the time.

Thanks, but it looks like the QDslrDashboard only controls the remote shooting. I am mostly looking for the ability to transfer the shots from the camera to an iPhone or an iPad, as I did it on the 70D (before the wife "confiscated" it from me).

You can set either one of them to download either the JPEGs or the RAW files to your controller device.

Which means (I think, not tested) that you can use qdslrdashboard on your computer to download directly.

I am having a good experience with the Eye Fi Pro X2 card in my 7DII. I am using the rate button to protect the images I want to transfer to my phone. Choose Eye Fi card as wifi network on phone. Eye Fi app on iPhone then does the transfer of those protected images. Can go from camera to phone in just moments. CF card records raw images and SD card saving medium JPGs. Pretty seamless thus far...(knock on wood...)

I know that Canon has outrageous pricing on their WFT units. They seem to think that the desire to use them is among organizations like Getty images and such, where quite a lot of money is tumbling around anyway.

Regardless, they work well. I like the higher level WiFi implementations (not those built in to some lower spec EOS cameras, but those provided by the WFT accessories), since they can do FTP transfers of images on demand when you shoot. I frequently use that when I use my own camera at work. Connect camera to company WiFi, run FTP server on my computer in the office, take photos out in the workshop and when I'm back in the office the images are already in my computer. Very handy. Totally not worth the cost, but very handy.
