Hey there,

I'd like to determine demand for Sony compatibility with advanced off-camera and on-camera flash features such as HSS and TTL. Can you guys let me know what features you want, specifically as Sony photographers? Do you guys currently have any triggers, systems or flashes that you use already that provide advanced functionality, and if so, would you change anything about these systems?

Cheers

With Sony A7 :

For TTL and HSS I use Sony flash and Pixel King triggers.

For Manual with remote power control and HSS I use Godox AD360 and V860c flash and Pixel King triggers.

For Manual only with remote power control I use Yongnuo 622TX for Canon and YN568II/Canon 580EXII/430EXII flash with YN622c receivers.

For Manual with firing signal only I use any flash and strobe with YN RF603 cheap triggers

I don't think Sony will make a cheap price flash, so I hope third party flash company such as Yongnuo, Pixel, Godox, etc. can make their cheap Sony version flash :)

Everybody knows you don't need flash with the sensor that can be pushed 8 stops and recover the shadows just fine. :p :p :p

I wish there was a good third party system. I was able to get my 622 to fire off the top of an A7 - but didn't do more than that. it is possible the 622 tx may be able to do limited functions, manually, but nothing feature rich.

it definitely is a factor in not jumping brands for me.

Godox/Flashpoint r2 system, plus some canon stuff.

I use a Phottix Odin trigger with both Godox and Rovelight to achieve HSS. Odin will also do ETTL but only with speed lights at this time. An ETTL solution with studio strobes would be high on my want list as well as that of many others.

The Odin doesn't do Sony TTL with the Indra yet? There's a Sony Odin?

The Indra is platform dependent? I didn't know that.

Any flash that is receiving TTL control signals from a camera via a communications link has to know what that communications means.

Since each camera manufacturer has chosen to implement TTL using a proprietary protocol, the receiving flash has to know that protocol to work with that camera.

So, yes, the Indra is camera platform dependent, just like every other TTL flash.

The current Indra can be switched between Canon & Nikon, still offering TTL & HSS. But, so far, those two only.

?Only Phottix know whether future Indras will be firmware updatable to allow switching to play nice with other body brands - or - whether a new Indra will be required.

There is firmware listed for the Odin and Mitros on the download page and page 2 of the Indra indicates a USB port which suggests firmware upgradability even though none is listed on the download page.

So, we Sony shoots can hope.

The Nissin Di700A Flash with Air 1 Commander radio trigger now makes a model for Sony cameras that is compatible with Sony's P-TTL and is capable of HSS as well. You can read more info about it here.

Two Di700As and an Air 1 Commander are due here Tomorrow via UPS.
Will report on the results.

I look forward to hearing about them. I just got a single Di700A + Air Commander 1 and so far, I'm very pleased with it. So far, I've used mine for macro work mounted on my a7rII.

Have you had a chance to try HSS and TTL with them yet? What are your thoughts on their trigger?
