Ok I have the 300D and a friend has asked for some pics of his race next week. He is willing to pay me for them too. By looking at what I have you think it is possible??

Althought I'm not an expert I would of thought so yes. Obviously you won't be able to get many fast shots but panning the subjects and learning when to take the shot will help. I'd have thought the 70-200L would be perfect for motocross.

That is exactly what I was thinking... I am considering a body upgrade cause the friend also want to buy my camera.... I cannot afford the 1d MK II at this time so was looking at a MKI...

If you shoot JPEG, then the sports mode will help, however it only goes upto ISO 400.
If you use creative modes, then there is no AI Servo AF available. The 300D can do it but it's a bit tougher since you can't set it in RAW or creative mode and get AI Servo nor does the 300D have a big buffer or high fps. You'll have to be judicious with the rapid shots so you don't fill your buffer and miss good shots.
70-200 f4L will probably be the best lens unless you are far away, then the 400 might be better.

I'm pretty sure that this image was shot with a manual focus film camera.

of course it's possible

It's certainly do-able, even if having to be in "sports" scene mode to ensure AI Servo focus is a bit of a pain.
