reflex for my son

Hallo everybody,
my son (11,5 yo) would like to have a real camera, he has used a p&s but now it's broken and he looks at my reflex...
I'd stay with Canon, so that we can share lenses (I'd give him my old 35 mm f2 just to start, and maybe add a cheap 18-55).
I wouldn't set a very high budget, let's say 150 / 200 euros max, so that if the hobby is not going to last long we haven't spent a awful amount of money on it.
I'd go with a second hand 400d or 450d...any suggestions?

I think you're on the right lines with your suggestion of a 400d or 450d to start with and see how he gets on. I'm just about to give my daughter her first SLR which is my old 400d, she's just got to wait till my new one arrives.

For that cost you can pick up a used 40D instead. A much more solid camera.

Thinking back to when I bought my XSi/450D there was some reason I went with it over the 400D. But I can't remember what it was.

I think image quality went up significantly relative to other single generation updates. Or that might have been the introduction of the 18-55 II. Or maybe it has liveview and the 400D doesn't. Not sure, but it seems like there was something.

Fwiw, the 450D is a very capable camera.

I've found (and bought) a 350d for a really low price, I know it is a dinosaurus but, hey, it has all an absolute beginner needs to start learning about focus and exposure. of course liveview is not there (450d was the first) and this is a minus for manual focusing but my son has so many things to learn before that! hope he enjoys the new toy, fingers crossed
