If you ask me, if you can't understand how to use these modes and why you would use them, I dunno how you'll get the most out of your shots with a DSLR.
I agree completely--and I'd say the same thing about a compact camera too. I also feel that you can't get the most out of your shots in jpeg mode, though I know others feel differently. But that's a completely different thing than suggesting that you're wasting your money if you're not shooting in RAW. You can almost always improve your results by investing more time and experience. I always suggest that people get a camera that they can grow into rather than one that only has features they currently understand--that's not a waste, it's an investment.

I was curiuous, so I just ran a boolean search for "G6 or G5 or <etc...>" in titles only (since you can't exclude signatures) of the EOS forum, and got two pages of results.
Rgravel,
I know I'm sounding like a broken record, but the reason I like a swivel LCD is that you don't have to hold the camera in front of you. You can brace it at your waist, which is at least as stable as the traditional stance (try it). Or you can brace it against any stationary object--the world is your tripod. I never shoot at arms length--that's way too unstable.
