I got about a $1000 to spend on photo equipment, probably on lenses. I like to shoot wildlife, architecture, landscapes, and I think I have all the lenses that I need (see my signature). For traveling to Europe I take the 24-105, for wildlife - 100-400 II with or without Canon 1.4x TC. I have flashes, tripods, and software. Primes maybe? But I am not sure which and where I will use them.

Any ideas?

Do you have filters? Those would be great for landscapes! You could also look into an ultra wide angle lens if that is a direction you'd like to go in.

What about an ultra-wide angle lens, such as the 16-35 f/4 IS, for your 6D?

I was also going to suggest the 16-35 F/4 IS

16-35 f4 + filters for your architecture & landscapes seems like a good option.

What about upgrading the 70-200 to a F2.8? What about a faster prime like the 85 f1.8 or 135 f2

Thanks guys.

An ultrawide may be a good idea. Somehow I was not thinking about that considering that 24mm at the wide end of the 24-105 would be enough. But it is definitely something to consider.

I looked into primes - 85, 100, 135, but I could not figure out where I would use them, how I would fit them for my photography. I do not do portraits, prefer candids on the streets, I do not do macros - the 100-400 is good enough for my purposes. So it still remains open.

7DII + 18-200 + UWA (I have the Sigma 8-16 but the EFS 10-18 is probably the sweet spot in terms of value/capability)

60D + 18-200 + 8-16 is my light travel kit

The 18-200 is my wife's. She uses it for city travels and would never give it up. :-) I never liked that lens for architecture, it produces barrel distortions too high for my taste, even with the correction in the LightRoom, even though it is a good general universal lens.

I travel with the 6D plus the 24-105 (it would feel like 15-65). An UWA would be something to consider.

Still, what do people who don't do portraits do with the primes?

I'm looking at the 35L now, and I don't do portraits. I have nothing faster than f2.8 and want more options for astro and shallow DOF architectural details. Also might use it for a bit of landscape work.

The Sigma 24-35 Art also looks interesting, but it's big and heavy and probably not the best travel lens.

If you don't get the 16-35 then I would suggest the 24L or 35L.

Primes can be a way to limit your options and slow your workflow down. I love that, because it forces me to think about the shot I'm about to take.
I also always carry a prime when I'm using a zoom. For example, I pair my 17-40mm ultrawide zoom to a 85mm f1.8 prime. When I'm out shooting, the prime can force me to think differently, switching from ultrawide, deep DOF and long shutter times to more tele, with thin DOF and short shutter times. It opens up new perspectives.

How about waiting till you plan your next trip and see what kind of photography you'd like to do then?

Another option is using the 1000$ for an ultra zoom - travel by jet to an exotic location :)

I already know where my next trip is going to be - our daughter who lives in Paris is expecting twins in November. So it looks like most of our next trips will also be to or around Paris! And it looks as well that the "ultra zoom" - travels by jet - is already anticipated (and budgeted for). :-)
