putting this out there in several forums so I can make a decision. I have looked it up but no matter how much I try to find out I never get a definitive answer so I need your help please. I went to a paid event, the royal Lancashire show to be precise, and I was wondering whether I am allowed to take images there? If it is a paid entry does that make it private? And if I can take images, am I allowed to show them online on Flickr as long as I don't get paid for them? ? I mainly like to take street photography images and although I am pretty sure it is legal to do that without permission in a public place, I am not sure whether it is legal in a place like that. I also am not sure whether it is legal to put the images online on a website like Flickr without permission. Please tell me the best you can as it would really help me as I really want to just show these lovely images I have taken without being arrested  thank you in advance

If the rules where you are mirror those here in the U.S., the owner of the show and/or venue makes the rules as to whether photography of their event is allowed.

For the definitive answer, you'd need to ask the people that put on the show. Was there anything printed at the web site, on your tickets, in the programs, or on signs as you entered the grounds regarding photography?

Even if they did have a (poorly-publicized, it sounds, since you don't know if they have one) policy regarding photography at the event, the most they'd probably do initially, where you're not selling the photos, is tell you to remove them from public view.

bannedPermanent ban

If they don't want photos of the event being shared and displayed without permissions, they would have banned all photography there, including the attendance. I think it would be OK to post them on FB and Flickr since I see plenty of them. You will, obviously, get into problems if you are using these photos to promote a company or for any other promotions.

The short answer is that you're probably OK with just posting them. It's a can of worms & there is no "definitive answer". For instance, you're in that "other country". ; )

(UK) New site dealing with photographers rights.

Legal Rights of Photographers (external link)

I am confused about usage rights, motorsports related question

For instance, you can be sued/arrested for anything, even when you're totally in the right.

And if I can take images, am I allowed to show them online on Flickr as long as I don't get paid for them?

What you say about the images may be more important than posting the images with, "Hey! Look what I've just shot!" as opposed to "Hey! Look at this a--hole!", or "Visit my site where you can buy these images."

you wont have a problem, you can use any image you take for personal use and sharing, even of other people. you own the rights, you wont get into trouble unless you attempt to sell the photos and even then, unless you are attempting to use someone or somethings likeness as a marketing effort is really where the issue comes into play.

take pictures and share them.

thank you everyone. This helps a lot :-) I think I feel a little safer to put my street photography online now. At least without selling them. Do you think I should put a message in the description saying I will happily delete an image if the image is of them and they want me to? I think I will in fact contact the people and see what they say about it for those images taken at that particular event to be sure. Maybe they will want to buy them. Here's hoping nothing happens -?

there is literally nothing on the RLS site mentioning photography, and I'm assuming that they didn't object to your shooting while you were. As a private event, they can make the rules, but they do have to let you know what they are. OTOH, street photography is fine to display and sell, unless you want to use it commercially: tshirts, etc. then you'd want releases from the subjects.

Several issues....

You can take photos on private land until/unless you are informed not to do so by the landowner/event organisers etc. Even then the images taken are yours.

You can publish those image and you can sell prints unless you entered into a contract not to do so (IE by agreeing to terms & conditions when buying a ticket). You don't need the subjects permission to sell prints.

Unlike the US the UK does not have a right to publicity/image rights laws so you can use someone's likeness to sell something. However there are alternate (more difficult) ways for them to sue you such as "passing off" or defamation laws.
