Here is the story and my thoughts.
I have a 100-400 and I want to restore the body which is basically 3 main pieces:
the [Ring, zooming] YA2-3629 (which is in great shape)
the [Focus ring unit] CY1-2833 (needs to be completely replaced)
and the [Barrel ass'y, fixed] CY1-2837 (also needs replaced for cosmetic purposes).
I've had the lens disassembled to the point where I feel confident in replacing these pieces myself so I don't want to pay Canon to do it. Once I'm done I'll be sending it in to Canon for calibration and its a little stiff around 200mm when pushing/pulling. Since they might over-tighten the screws or use sealants/locktite I want that to be the last step so I won't have to worry about going back into it.
The smooth tight ring ... this is one area where I need some help. I can order it from Canon but it seems it will not come with any screws or caps. Ordering them is no problem but where to put the 2 screws and 3 caps is the problem! There are 5 holes, which do I choose? I've read that you relocate the screws one hole over to help when it doesn't hold tight after some age and wear. So which would be the beginning screw position? And furthermore, I'm wondering if the main piece includes YA2-3642 ?
A few options I can think of ...
** I can trial and error placing the screws.
** I could poll owners and get an average of screw location on new lenses or lenses that have never had work done to them. That would tell me whether they come out of the factory in the same locations or not.
** Or send it to Canon and have them replace that piece while they are working on it.
Does anyone have experience regarding this?
I'll post a picture of the objects in question...
And one last curiosity, does anyone get employee discounts on lens parts?
