I am getting ready to go to Hawk Mountain in Kempton, PA, the end of the month to photograph some Hawks. I currently have a Canon 5D mark III, and a 135mm, 200mm, and 400mm. Will I need all three lenses, or two of the three? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Nick

I think the 400mm will be the most important on top
of the mountain but the other focal lengths would be
cool to have for other things in the surrounding area.
Have fun there.

I revisited Hawk Mt last year (after 30 yrs) hoping to get some good shots. Had a 100-400mm. Don't recall what month it was, but mostly broad wings were flying by. Didn't have any opportunities to take a photo. It was a bluebird day, so all were way high. You might get lucky and see a falcon dive at the owl on the post. I concluded that it's not the best place for hawk photography unless you put in a great deal of time. Hope you have better luck than I did. Was nice to see it again.

Rookie, max, and larry. Thanks for the input. I think I will take the 200 and 400 with me next week. There were 8 Hawks there yesterday, compared to 13 last week. With the weather being warm, they are staying up higher. The weather is supposed to cool down this weekend, so, they may come closer. Thanks again.

Wow - what a great site! Thanks, Larry!

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

Larry. yes, I check the site every few days now.
Tom. The site is very useful. You can sign up for their email (which I have), and get a lot of up-to-date info on what happened that day, and upcoming days.

I haven't been there in decades but I remember going into the education center and
there was a big window with a few bird feeders and water running below them.
They had to be more different species of birds feeding together at one time than I have ever
seen in my life. Some not too common. Down on the ground at the same time were woodchucks & raccoons.
The great folks running that place surely knew what they were doing.

I used to sit up there at the mountain top with a friend of mine in Sept/Oct.
and come down with sunburn on just half my face from sitting all day in the same direction.
This was with film cameras. Manual focus.
You should have an easier time with auto focus.
Great place. Have fun.
Have breakfast before you go and don't forget to eat all your scrapple.

Max. They have made a few changes up there, since you were there. The south view trail has been changed so that people can get to the South Lookout a lot easier. My wife, who is from Jersey, is the scrapple eater in the family. I, being from the Pittsburgh area, am not. We will eat a good breakfast before going there. Thanks to all who commented.
