Not sure why our photog gave us this photo since there were others that were good, but I'm glad she did. Wasn't sure if I should put this in the discussion area or photo sharing. Since it's a photo, it lands here. I'm sure you can discuss a photo though.

Here is one of our reception that I completely forgot about! I recently put a new SSD in my laptop and was looking through our wedding photos and came across this gem.... This is my wife's aunt. The funny thing is, If you know her and you heard she did this, you would say to yourself, "Yup, that sounds like something she would do." At the time, I did notice her getting in the way and I told her to stop.

Too many people are oblivious to the situation and convince themselves that they are helping or doing something nice when they are actually getting in the way and in now way helping. It's usually for their own selfish reason. "I want photos of the day" "What if the paid photog misses some shots. I will get the shots they miss for the B&G"

This was 3 years ago and I still have never seen any of the photos she took. So...she clearly took them for herself. She annoyed us and our photographer and got in the way and ruined some shots just to get photos she either took for herself or just completely forgot about later. They must not have been as important to her as she was making them out to be when she was getting in the way.

A similar thing happened at my Granddaughters 3rd birthday party.

Every time I went to compose a shot a woman with a P&S would cut in front of me, so I had to wait and recompose when she got out of the way.

I think that people who see a person with a "professional set-up" (i.e non P&S or camera phone) think that the see something they don't, so they jump in, as not to "miss" anything.

Or they are just being a PITA.

Frustrating to say the least.

Do you find it easier or harder to yell at them to get out of the way when they are family?

Not that one is ever of the inclination to yell at any guest without a good reason...but for the ones who are persistently in the way...do you hesitate at all when it's family?

I'm ok with people taking their own photos from a distance. Whether someone should or should not take photos at a wedding is not the issue here. Give them space, don't get up in there and get in the way. If you are going to take your own photos, do it as to not be noticed. Don't use a flash and don't get in the way. She was SO close to us in this. How can you be so clueless to your surroundings? It's not the fact that she got in the way that upset me, it's how disrespectful and rude it is that gets me. Stand back and take photos. Use your digital zoom on your P&S. And if you are using an interchangeable lens camera at someone's wedding where you weren't paid to shoot, you are putting too much effort into making it about you (that is another thread though).

BAH! This wasn't a great photo to begin with but, if anything, it is amusing. It's a *facepalm* moment. It is also the sad reality that we all live in and have do deal with one way or another. It's not the end of the world. If not to be an example of what NOT to do, hopefully this will at least serve as entertainment. :)

My cousin's wedding made two announcements. One at the ceremony and another at the reception. The minister simply told everyone that the bride and groom wishes that everyone enjoys their day, and please ask to refrain from getting photos of the day. They mentioned that the photographer will provide photos for all to download, and even included his future link to the back of the ceremony program. At the reception they simply asked all those to do the same.

And you know what, I think people actually did enjoy the day. I even downloaded a couple from his website. Looking through the photos, I didn't see the backs of people's phones, and saw their faces instead. It was nice.

As a photographer or as family?

Being the groom, and personally knowing her Aunt, I had no problem yelling at her. She knows me and knows I am blunt. We are all blunt with each other. She wasn't in the way after that. And she wasn't mad at me either.

As a photographer, I am polite and either step in front of them or politely tell them to move. I don't have time to ask people to move. I just say it in a professional way. So far, everyone has listened and have had no issues. You just gotta be firm and confident. If you ask or tell them to move with a tone that implies you are giving them a chance to say no, then they will walk all over you.

The image wasn't obvious, given the context of the thread? How about, "You needed a shepherds crook, & maybe a cute, inoffensive, little girl to wield it & yank poachers out of the way?

That's a great idea! Allowing guests to download them that is. I have been contemplating doing that myself.

I have been telling the B&G they can request an "un-plugged" ceremony or day. None have done it yet but haven't really had any issues either.

O yea, I got it shortly after. Took me a minute. *facepalm*

That actually isn't a bad idea though. If you have an assistant then have the assistant politely ask people to stand behind a certain point. Or a friend of the family could do it.

Maybe draft one of the flower girls to yank someone that you'd ask to get in the way. Everyone would have a good laugh, & your point would have been made? ; D
