Hi.

I'm using 60D with Sigma 17-50 and some MF prime lenses.
After got addicted to MF lenses, and tired of heaviness and chroma noise (I'm kinda noise n-a-z-i) from my 60D. So I decided to switch to Sony MILC.
I wish I can afford an a7 but I can't. So there are something I'm confusing between NEX-6/7 and a6000.

Firstly, it's about the price. I can find some 2nd-handed NEX-6 at grey market with $250-$300 and NEX-7 for a little more. But brand new a6000 only cost $520 and it's from Sony authorized dealer/retailer (not grey market) and about $630 with PZ 16-50 kit lens (both of them included a 8GB memory card, bag, screen protector, 120$ worth of apps card) and even cheaper if I can find someone wanna upgrade to full-frame or just get bored with a6000.
Secondly, I use MF lenses most of the time (so a6000's Fast Hybrid AF system and 11fps continuous shooting speed kinda useless for me) so I added NEX-6/7 to my list because a6000 and NEX-7 is almost the same in image quality (IQ).
Thirdly, sometimes I have to go some unprofessional events (veteran meeting with my father, friends meeting/wedding, etc...). So I willing to take the PZ16-50 (or SEL18-55 kit). Does the kit is good enough for my needed? Because I'm gonna sell it include 60D to take a6000.

Flashes and lights isn't a problem because I can control Manual-only flashes and lights.

I'm also shooting video, so a6000 just received XAVC S update that really helpful in post-processing. And I think NEX-6 and 7 didn't receive it. And does XAVC S update worth to buy a6000?

What do you guys think? Should I get a brand new a6000 (comes with promotion I mentioned about) or 2nd-handed a6000 or even NEX-6/7?

I'm not English native, so sorry for my poor English, if you can't understand something I said, I will try to explain it on reply.

Well, other than what I've heard from 2 guys I know who have/had the A6000 I can't really comment on it personally. But, I did have the NEX6. I can tell you certainly that it's a noisy camera. I wouldn't go past ISO800 if I could help it, and even then it had some fairly noticeable noise. Also, you mention getting a kit lens so I'm sure you'll do some autofocusing eventually....the NEX6 was merely "ok" with AF. From what I understand the A6000 is one of the best AF cameras on the market. Those two reasons would make me consider the A6000 over the NEX6/7 (everyone I know who had a 7 sold it as soon as the 6 came out for various reasons)

As for kit lenses, I had both...hated the 18-55mm (weird distortion, worse than the pancake), and just bulky when added to the tiny mirrorless body. The 16-50mm was actually really sharp, but maybe I got a good copy because some people say it's soft. f5.6-8 for best results obviously. Plus the tiny size makes it great to take with you just in case. It can fit in a pants pocket and you won't know it's there unless you wear skinny jeans.

Thanks for replied.

I only get the kit lens because their wide-angle.

I could easily find some 28mm MF lens but I think 28mm on APS-C isn't enough because I usually shoot indoor.

So I think I will get the body only and take the 2nd handed kit lens from users who doesn't need it anymore for cheaper price.

If you prefer 28mm then I'd seriously consider the Sigma 30mm 2.8, it's easily the best value lens for the NEX system. Razor sharp with great contrast. Every couple months I'm tempted to buy another NEX just so I can pair it with that lens and use it as a walk-around kit. Last I saw they jumped up in price a bit, but were around $150 used.

You can also get a cheap ($100 USD) Chinese focal reducer to make your vintage lenses behave more like they would on an a7.

As for the NEX vs. a6000... I would choose the a6000 based on menus alone.

Canon 60D has the same sensor as my T3i had. And now I am shooting Nex-6.

I disagree with it being "Noisy". It's certainly not the high-ISO demon like A7x, but it's better in low light than my T3i was. Not a night and day better but better.

The bigger difference is going to be the dynamic range. It's very noticeable.

If choosing between Nex-6 and 7, I'd go with 6, the sensor in 7 can be very demanding to lens quality. I'd however ask people on TalkEmount.com.

If choosing between Nex-6 and A6000, I'd go with 6000 if you don't intend on upgrading the camera for a few years, even though you shoot manual now, your preferences may change. However I am shooting some action with my 6 and it comes out OK. It's really not that bad.

If you need a universal AF lens for non-critical work, you basically have 4 choices:

1) 16-50PZ. It's very compact (when off and collapsed) and OK IQ but not stellar.

2) 18-55; it's less compact, and better IQ; I'd say it's close to Canon 18-55IS. You can get a used one for peanuts ( I paid $70 for mine). Just make sure it's black or built after 2012. The early silver ones suffered from bad QC.

3) Sigma 30/2.8, especially the older DX version. Being a prime it's less versatile, but it's very sharp and compact. $150 or so street, used. Or if you like a wider angle, Sony 20/2.8 pancake.

4) Alternately, you may go all out and get 18-105/4; it's about the size of your Sigma (but lighter) and very versatile, especially for video.

I'd say for what you want, Nex-6 body with a used 18-55 would be the cheapest yet very good solution.

Ex-Canon shooter. Now Sony Nex.
