Can anyone recommend any software suitable for cataloging large quantities of high def video and images. I'm talking multiple TB in total, most of that video, though it includes product photos, staff photos, etc. Video is things like recordings of meetings. If it's a storage solution as well that's a bonus. This is for a business that happens to generate a lot of images and video as part of the business, but it's not the main part of the business.

Requirements:
- Keywords, tags, various metadata
- Setting access rights for use
- Able to be embedded into / share on websites (if permissions for that image / video allow)
- Either on-premise or cloud hosted, but cloud hosted is best
- Does not try to take rights (eg copyright) to the images
- Supports a wide variety of image and video formats
- Multiuser system

You don't mention Lightroom, which would provide most (if not all) of the functionality that you mention. So, does this mean that you for some reason(s) reject looking at LR? I honestly don't know about other programs that provide the breadth/depth of functionality that LR does...one interesting question would be "setting access rights for users"...LR is restricted to a "single user" catalog, although that catalog can be exported for use by another user. It doesn't have the "network sharing" that other databases have, so, the fact remains that your other specifications are met quite well, including metadata and video and Web functionality.

LR is effectively single user, doesn't enforce permissions, and isn't a server that can host and share images. I'm really thinking a business grade multiuser system, ideally cloud hosted.

You may have to look at a multi-user database system, combined with an image organizational system, do-able, but it would take some actual work to implement...databases do in fact require co-ordination, it's common to "lock" the database when another user is "on", similar to the Lightroom implementation (LR uses the My SQL approach, locking the database while a user is on). The difference being that the LR catalog can't be stored and used from a network server!

Thanks. I'm an IT solution architect, I design software and hardware systems that run critical business systems, typically six or seven figures. Every time I start a new project I have to do domain research. I just figured someone here might've come across a high end solution that could give me a few ideas. The budget for this five figures.

Tim I am thinking that this will require a customised SQL database system, I would imagine with an Apache webserver to handle the "cloud" side of things. I would probably be looking towards customising one of the open source e-commerce systems such as Zencart for this. This way each image/video becomes a "product". This would also allow varied levels of access. You can have admins with full access for maintaining and uploading to the DB. The users of the data will be like customers, but they will only have access to the data. I manage a Zencart based online shop for a friend, who is completely computer illiterate, even he can manage to upload a basic new product, and deal with the day to day work. Oh and Zencart has a basic download only product type built in, as well as dealing with physical stuff.

Zencart is all SQL and Perl so should not pose too much of a problem programming wise.

Thanks for your thoughts Al. "Cloud" in this context means a hosted service, rather than just running on a server somewhere. We've already found one hosted service provider. I know there are plenty of products out there that let you catalog and share your media, I'm just looking for recommendations

There are two main options for what I'm looking for:
- A piece of web based software that can run on a server in our server room, accepts uploads, downloads, etc, cataloging media files
- A rich client application running on multiple PCs, along with a web server to server to the Intranet/Internet.

For example:
- Canto Cumulus (external link).
- Phase One Media Pro (external link)

I don't think either are perfect for what we need, but they're in the right direction.

...Photoshelter have just launched a new service called Libris. I haven't looked too closely at it, but it appears to tick a few of your boxes, but not all, and has a free trial. (Disclosure, I'm a long time happy photoshelter user)

THAT is interesting - thanks! Even $5K per year is nothing in the content of this project. Seems to tick most of the boxes... worth putting into my shortlist :)
