For the past two months I have been pricing Canon 70D's with and without bundles. Walmart appears to have the best price by 200.00 plus they are throwing in a card, and other things. Has anyone else purchased their equipment through Walmart, and if so, what has your experience been (good or bad)? I'm not a Walmart fan, but for this price I can't turn away so quickly. Here is the link to the bundle that I'm looking at. Best Buy, B&H, and others are asking over 1600.00 for just the camera and both lenses. I don't see any hidden verbiage where this would be a re-furbished camera.

Thank you in advance!

$1500 for that is too much.

It's mostly junk.

Here's what I'd do:

1. Get a used/refurb 70D. Canon's Refurb store I think has it for $750. Otherwise, shop! (Keh, thebay, etc).
2. Select your lenses yourself. Definitely avoid those 75-300 scams. That's a $50 lens, you can't even give those things away. Bad.
3. All that other trash is trash. You don't want a bundle. It's just junk to make the uninformed think they're getting more, but they're not. Pick your own accessories.

There's nothing wrong with a refurb.
You're clearly shopping so you have a budget.
Don't be afraid of saving hundreds by getting refurb/used.

I'd get the 70D refurb from Canon's refurb store.
I'd then grab an 18-135 STM used/refurb as well from Canon, or from ebay or some one here on POTN or FM, etc.
I'd then get new batteries (extras) by Wasabi from amazon or something.
I'd grab some SD cards on amazon or something.
Done.

Very best,

Thank you for the quick and very useful reply! Just wondering about the "refurbished" cameras. You say there is nothing wrong with a refurb ... but doesn't that bring the risk factor up a little? Maybe I'm a little naive about what a refurb is. Does clicks matter or does that start all over when it's refurbished? How does one know what abuse it has been through. I'm not challanging you, I truely do not know anything about refurbished cameras. A bit scary for me not knowing.

The other thing I'm wondering about is the 75-300 (which Canon is selling for over 600.00 new). I already have a Sigma 75-300 and I really like it, but I don't have anything to compare it to. It's the only zoom lens I've ever owned. What would you suggest in it's place? While we are on the subject ... Canon lens vs Sigma or any other off brand? Your thoughts? They say the glass is more important than the camera, so I would like to get something good.

You seem to know a lot about this subject, and I appreciate your feedback! Thank you ...

Refurbs from Canon Direct have a one year warranty. My 6D is a refurb and it is flawless. Buy with confidence. And Mal is right about that bundle... it's a bunch of crap you don't need or want. Personally I stay away from Wally World, but that's just me. YMMV

Keep your eyes on CanonPriceWatch for bundle deals as they pop up quite often.

I'm so glad I came on here and asked! I did try to go to Canons refurb site but they are down for maintenance. Will try again tomorrow. This will save me a bundle. Good to hear positive feedback from other users that have purchased refurbished cameras.

Thank you!!

Heya,

The 75-300 that is included is this lens (external link). Literally usually $80 new. It's probably Canon's worst lens you could buy. There are several versions of 75-300 and 70-300, so that's the confusion part. They even listed it, the III model. It's literally used $50 and generally only attracts flies. Avoid it. They will charge you a few hundred in the bundle and make you think you're getting a deal. You're not.

If you want a modern, very good telephoto for an inexpensive cost, get a refurb/used Canon 55-250 STM. Under $200 usually.

Nothing wrong with a refurb from Canon. It comes fully serviced with a 1 year warranty. Save the "initial buyer fee" by going refurb. Everything you need is in their refurb store if it's available.

70D + 18-55 STM + 55-250 STM would be an excellent package from Canon's Refurb Store.

Very best,

Adorama has an open box, new 70d with warranty and 18-55 stm for 919.00. Includes 1 year drops and spills warranty from Adorama. Add a refurbished or used 55-250 stm and you have a pretty good starter kit.

Everything I see posted for advise is solid...the first thing that jumps at me from walmart.....in my state, if I paid that much from a brick and mortar store like walmart I would end up paying an additional $120.00 in taxes. Don't know about buying from Canon store but when I purchased my camera from B & H last spring there was not tax and they didn't charge shipping. The more you look into this the more "ways" you will find to save yourself some coin.

Canon will charge sales tax for states that charge it.

Definitely look at http://canonpricewatch.com (external link) for up-to-date price information.

Not a thing wrong with refurbished. I used to buy all my electronics as refurbs, why? Because "somebody" had their hands on it and fixed/repaired/replaced/refurbished the gear then tested it then sold it. So I know a human had hands on it and it worked.

Out of 9-10 cameras, a few lenses, some accessories all my gear has been purchased used through here or FM. Check everyday, check feedback, check seller posts, do some homework and a deal will come along.

ANY bundle deals ANYWHERE are not worth it. As noted above, a bunch of crap worth $50 dollars to jack up the price of the main item in the bundle.

Listen when you are here, great advice flowing around.

All good advice ... I am paying attention! I have been checking Canonpricewatch daily. Haven't found anything yet, but I feel so empowered right now with all of this new information. I don't think I would have even considered a referb before talking with all of you! Thank you very much for taking the time to post all of your feedback. I have my eyes open for a Canon 70D +18-135 STM + 55-250 STM. I'm anxious to get one though and waiting doesn't come easy for me :-( With the savings, I'm thinking ocf ... extra cards ... battery grip ... yay!

Again, I appreciate all of you ... this has been awesome!

I looked at used 70d's but they were about the same as canon refurb but w no warranty....then I started looking at canon returns...but for a little more, you can get brand new. I prefer the piece of mind of a new product. I ended up with a new 70D body from best buy for $1099 w a good 32gb sd card and a decent camera back pack.

I have my eyes open for a Canon 70D +18-135 STM + 55-250 STM.

The 18-135mm STM is more convenient, but the 18-55mm STM is sharper. See my comparison. Be informed and make the choice that is right for you.
