So currently have the Canon 50 f1.8, Canon 24-70 f2.8L and Tamron 70-200 f2.8 and a 1D Mark III

I mainly shoot motorsport and love being able to zoom etc (but mainly use the 24-70 as opposed to 70-200 as i'm track side) as I am happy to rent a tele for big car shows.
Aside from that i am looking at doing equine photography and hopefully some models / static car / astro.

Does it sound like a smart move to sell all the lenses and get a Canon 50 f1.4 or a 1.2 if i can find one and a 14mm superwide?

Only you know what focal length lenses work for your needs.
Try using your existing 50 mm as your longest focal length lens to see if you can live with that.
I use longer focal length lenses for 99% of what I do so my answer would be you are crazy!! ;-)a

Haha, yeah, I think that my 24-70 is most used and 70-200 is next, but that is because zooms have made me lazy and I Dont really fancy moving as much lol!

Don't do it. You will regret it. Zooms and motorsports go together.

No, considering what you shoot, it doesn't sound smart at all. In fact, for the thing you mainly shoot, and the equine possibilities, I would think that one would go in the other direction and get longer glass, such as the 70-300mm or 100-400mm.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

Motorsport wise i generally shoot more at the 24mm end and have actually wanted something wider! I also spend a lot of time in the pits so having UWA for that would be awesome.
I was thinking that if there was a big show where i couldnt get track side or that i needed a tele for i could just rent one.

As a test i'm going to strap my 50 onto my cam and keep my 24-70 in by bag just incase but see if i actually can do what i want to do with my 50. I would love something i can get some razer thing dof shots for highlighting parts of car in a static shoot hense thinkngin about the 50 1.2

This is my default advice for almost *anyone* who seems bored with their current lenses, or feels that he's not achieving the quality he wants. Zooms encourage laziness; primes encourage thoughtfulness; and the standard prime above all others encourages good composition as opposed to reliance on wide distortion or telephoto compression for impact. It's a great thing to do, and I'd be perfectly happy to super-glue my 50L onto my camera for evermore. BUT... for someone who has such specific interests, I'm not sure it'd be appropriate - unless you're really hyped up and committed to the 50L wide-open look, I'm not sure it'd serve you better in the situations you describe than a really great wide zoom. If you're really thinking of selling everything and paring down to a couple of lenses with maximum versatility in mind, for the jobs you're talking about I'd choose the 16-35L and the 85L.

would it be advisable to try and use my existing 50mm as much as possible and see how it does for my uses?
I have decided regardless i'm going to buy a superwide just because i love the look and think it could be epic for my skate / parkour work. i think i need to pretend that i don't have my 24-70 and see how i get on :-)

What do you use your 50 for?

No doubt about that!

Blimey - practically everything these days. I do still carry an X100 when Ryanair forces me to travel light, and an iPhone every day, but if I'm ever going to carry my 'proper' camera, I only take the 50L. I prefer the natural perspective and the quality of the images it provides over anything else.

I haven't owned a 50mm since back in the 80s...
Never found the need for one with the optical quality of zooms the way they are nowadays..

I was just blown away with the build quality and sharpness of the 50L and the 1.2 is simply bokehlicious

Also going to look back through my lightroom library and see how much was shot at 50 or around there.

If you want to go wider have you considered the Canon 16-35 F4 L IS? I have been very impressed by mine! A friend of mine briefly tried my 16-35 on 1D4 (APSH sensor like your 1D3), them bought one the following day!

Doesn't sound like it to me.

If you want to do astro, get a tracker (iOptron skytracker for example).
If you want to do equine, models, etc, stick to your 70-200.
For everything else, the 50 & 24-70 covers "general" stuff and wide angles.

The best thing I see to do, at this point, is trade in that 1D3 for a 6D/5D3.

Very best,
