If you can live with a fact that Canon does not support it anymore, go for it! It is amazing lens indeed. Fast focusing and absolutely perfect image quality even at f/2.8 aperture. As sharp as any modern L series telephoto lens, really.
And the bokeh, so smooth and creamy you wanna eat your photos (not quite a good idea, tho)!

Merlyn - I assume you are referring to the Canon 300 F2.8 L (not the IS versions).
If so then yes it is no longer serviced - but this is reflected in the prices. As to the quality of the lens the have no worries it is superb. Compared to the newer models - I have the Mk1 IS model and I find it no better, but it is still serviced which is something to consider. The IS Mk2 is better than either of them but one would have to be a Guru of heightened enlightenment to see the difference in IQ - it's real advantages are in AF especially with Mk3 extenders.
It is a cracking lens but you must consider that if anything goes wrong you may be hunting around for spares so consider that when you decide how much to pay for it.
P.S. it was VERY successful, it was just superseded.

Life is for living, cameras are to capture it (one day I will learn how!).

If I'm not mistaken this lens was first released when Canon moved wholesale to the EF mount in the late 80's, so not surprising that it was eventually "upgraded" with IS in the late 90's
