I have a day in Singapore next week. Two questions pls:
1) I plan to buy a Canon lens when there - would you recommend doing this? If so, any advice on where to go?
2) any advice on what to do / visit when there?
I did try search... Thanks

I don't know about where to buy stuff, downtown is full of shops...

As to where to go, definitely the "Chinatown" area and the India area, and then there are some parks to visit...don't remember the names...check out the old Buddhist temple, I believe in the Chines sector. In other words get out of downtown, it's pretty much like any big city, until night falls...there is a nightlife there!

I found this:
Reputable photo shops with knowledgable staff include Alan Photo, Cathay Photo, John 3:16 and Ruby photo. They have different branches so you can google to find one close to you. Peninsula Plaza is a good place to go.

I can't vouch for it, however. The tip came from a tripadvisor post.
I was last there 48 years ago, so I know nothing. Back then there were internationally known trading companies still there from the colonial days that sold camera equipment.

I've bought gear from Cathay Photo, as well as a camera, and subsequent lenses from Harvey Norman (much more limited selection) up in Singapore.

Generally I've found prices in either Australia or America to be better, but both these places will probably price match. In Asia, Hong Kong seems to be the best place for gear prices; there are warranty issues with HKG however.

The best thing about Singapore is the food, wander back from Chinatown through Boat Quay towards Marina Bay & you're sure to find plenty to photograph, and eat.

This time of year walking around it will be hot, but the MRT & taxis are cheap, & easy to use.

There are food stall centers all around Singapore, called 'hawker stalls'. All are closely regulated by the health department, and you can buy one dish from one, another dish from another, another dish from a third stall, etc. and ALL serve superb tasting food and you sit at a table area central to all the food stalls! Get the chili crab, if at all possible. One hawker center might be more Chinese food oriented, another Singaporean or Malay food oriented, another Arab food oriented, but I yearn to be in Singapore again just for the hawker stalls!!!

Forget the photography equipment, go eat at hawker stalls!
