I am still working through the business side of things and I am wondering what the pro's do as far as meetings after the event (wedding, engagement, etc.). Do you edit before the couple meets with you, or do you wait until you meet, or do you even meet with them or just do online galleries? I do not have much interest in selling prints at this point, but that is something I would consider expanding into. Really any pointers would be awesome! Thanks in advance.

  • Edit out the technically inferior shots (e.. focus way off) which you cannot fix up in postprocessing.
  • Leave in photos which have shots with people with expressions that aren't ideal...it may be the only shot of that person, who might be dying or someone seldom seen who travelled thousands of miles to the wedding!
  • Present the photos, explaining that -- depending upon the aspect ratio of the print size ordered -- cropping to fit a particular size print might not work well with certain shots.
  • Describe any retouching capabilities you can perform, that could be performed to improve upon certain headshots and discuss the kinds of cosmetic 'embelishments' to someone's photo that they do or do not want to do (and remember, maybe they want a mole removed, but maybe they don't!).
  • Don't spend time adding vignetting or soft focus effects to shots...some folks might like them but many just plain don't! But show a few examples of before/after to demonstrate what they might wish to have done with certain photos when they place their order.

You need to give me OK to edit your image and repost! Keep POTN alive and well with member support https://photography-on-the.net/forum/donate.php

I don't meet with people after their shoot. I mail the DVD and USB. Have albums sent directly to them. I upload their online gallery and send them the login details. If people order prints it is done through the online gallery, fulfilled by a pro lab and directly mailed to them.

My wedding workflow. After the wedding I cull, edit, and if applicable create a first draft album before I see the couple. Blog posts usually go online with a day or two of the wedding as well.

Print sales have dropped to zero for me. If my print sales system stopped working I'd not bother getting it going again.

Aside from the standard stuff - cull/edit/deliver

If the client is really good and made me really happy I normally send them a little gift or something

Oh and don't forget sneak peeks :D Instagram is pretty powerful these days and a lot of their guests are able to see and comment on them

Cull edit then deliver in person to go through the pictures with them. That way I get some real feedback and the clients love the personal touch.

My weddings are all local though, if I had nationwide coverage that might have to be revised.

Same. I work from home, so for me to meet a client after a wedding it would need to be at a cafe or at their place...and I don't see the point. I deliver my images in an online gallery, in a blog post and in a really nicely packages wooden USB box. I send them the album design using a nifty little proofing site called album parrot that links with my online gallery (shootproof) so they can make any changes they want by dragging images from their gallery to the digital pages. A bit of back and forth and I get my albums printed and drop shipped to them.

The more I work, the more I streamline my work. More shooting, less meeting, editing, etc.
