Hello
I recently bought Canon 24-70/4L IS USM which is a very good and sharp lens. It covers a lot. I want to have focal lengths that will not clash so much with each other. Such as 17-40 and 24-70. I'll sell my 17-40 tomorrow and I'm thinking of three lenses that will be of landscape and night shots. Remember that I always use a tripod when it comes to this kind of photography.

My two options:
Samyang 14 / 2.8 or Tokina 16-28 / 2.8.

I have never photographed manually only used mf function on my af lens. It might not be such a big difference in this type of photography? An advantage of Samyang also is that the filter holder is possible ..

The Tokina is a zoom and I like zooming. The clash is not much with the Canon 24-70 either. Have no problem with the weight either. But no ND filter.

What do you think?

Those are two entirely different lenses. I own the 17-40 and Rok 14. One does not replace the other. Manual focus is a non-issue at 14mm, but that is my opinion, and may not be yours.

I've had my Rokinon 14 for about a year. I don't see a way to mount a filter on it. I guess you could rig up some sort of external contraption. But you could do the same for the 16-28.

Yeah ok. But Samyang does sell a holder especially for the 14mm: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Slho4QzTcxw (external link).
But what do you have to say about the Samyang then?

I don't use any filters on my Rokinon 14mm. How is this setup different than a Cokin setup-up on the 16-28? Same-same, if you ask me. In that light, both lenses take filters. It still comes down to 14mm is a bunch wider than 16mm, do you need a zoom, are you OK with manual focus?

I use the rok 14 and have a filter from behind the lens, works very well.

I went with the Tokina. I felt 16 was wide enough, wasn't worried about filters, and wanted a lens that would give 20-28 with virtually zero distortion. I am very happy with the lens, it is a hell of a value for the price.

Pretty sure Fotodiox makes a filter holder for this lens, also pretty sure it was 2 or 3 hundred bucks. If I ever have lots of spare time to devote to landscapes I might pick one up, but that's a long way away.

I almost think that I regret a little bit here. What do they do if I have two optics that have focal lengths that conflict? no. My 24-70 and 17-40 has two 77mm filters that are very good and smooth. 17-40 is weather sealed that I think is important. I still think I'll keep my 17-40, it does a good job. Even though I use it less than before, it is not less worthy of having the equipment. I have, after all, two 6D so both lenses can be used at the same time :)

Excuse me, everyone. Thanks for the help.

Loved the IQ of the Tokina, but the flaring was ghastly and was a huge issue. It led to me selling it off a couple years ago. Any light source created rainbow rings and ghosts, even Christmas lights!

Mine doesn't have a filter slot on the rear of the lens. How do you mount it?

Take a look at the 15mm f4 Venus Loawa lens. It has been getting pretty good reviews and has the added advantage of being a macro lens with shift capabilities.

I cheat, I use the ND throttle, which only works with the A7x camera. It's an EF to E adapter with built in variable ND filter, which is not susceptible to usual variable ND problems. Another option is to tape a gel to the rear element...

the tokina does flare pretty bad, but I love mine (bought a roki 14 first, didn't like it, traded it for the tokina). I also picked up the fotodiox wonderpana filter adapter, which I love/hate. Hate setting it up, but love having the ability to use filters. The tokina has it's limitations but I really like mine
