I am searching for a solution, I use black rapid straps and I am also buying a mefoto roadtrip and I decided to make the switch to acra swiss style ballheads, I purchased sirui k30x ballhead to go ontop of my everyday tripod.

I don't trust the standard screw type clamps to hold my camera on the strap, I do like the lever clamps they have a 2 step process to release the camera which seems much more secure, but my question is there really a diference between a lever clamp and a standad screw clamp? lever clamps have a screw on the opposite side of the plate that the lever is on, will that screw back out far enough to let the quick release plate fall to the ground, completely negating the benefit of the 2 step process of the lever clamp?

Here is an example.

Are there lever clamps that don't use a separate screw adjustment?

First off, most feel the screw clamp is more secure, as you can tighten to your hearts content. So the very basis of your question is unique.

The big advantage of the lever is speed. (though I'm unconvinced this is really that much difference, that's just my opinion)

Some lever clamps (in fact the originals made by RRS for instance) do not use an adjusting screw on the opposite side. Of course this limits those clamps functionality to plates with tight spec/tolerances.

I have a host of screw clamps, been using most of them since before the lever clamp was available, and never had one accidentally come undone. It also means I can use all of my various manufacturer Arca plates with no concern for interchangeability. Lever clamps (most of them) can have problems digesting different spec'ed plates.

The one lever clamp I do own is a Sunway just like the one you refer to, with the screw on the opposite side. this allows me to use it with every plate, and yet use it quickly once it is set up to the plate I am using at the time. After about two years with it, I am still not sure I will keep it vs. the Wimberly screw clamp it has for now replaced.

Those that are serious into the lever clamps buy only very specific plates to fit them. RRS and Wimberly for instance I know are EXACTLY the same, however oddly the original Arca Swiss is not. The convince of the lever being worth the additional cost for the better pricier plates.

The price difference can be significant with a no name long lens plate made in China costing maybe $15.00, a name brand China like Benro being maybe $20.00, or an RRS or Wimberly costing $50-$80.00

I have read many posts about people saying exactly the same thing as you, that the screw clamps don't come loose, and I do believe it, but when I have 2 cameras hanging upside down from straps I want the piece of mind that there is a 2 step process for the clamp to release.

Do you know of a lever clamp that has the adjustability of a screw without the seperate screw? I mean where the lever itself rotates for adjustment of slightly different size plates?

The current RRS B2 LRII clamps are lever clamps that are self-adjusting to fit most Arca-Swiss style clamps (except, they note, Novoflex or Arca-Swiss (the brand) P0 Slideflex plates. No screws to fiddle with, either.

the only clamp I've ever had come loose...... was a clamp...... screws dont come loose.

That said, black rapid is not your solution. If you're transitioning, get an L bracket, and use the optech sling ($22) with said bracket like so:

I was a diehard screw clamp user until members here persuaded me to try a lever release clamp. I've been using lever clamps for years now and have had no issues at all. I use clamps from Acratech and RRS. The RRS 60mm clamps are self-adjusting as Jon points out in post #4 and the Acratech clamps have a lock in the lever that must be released before you can open the clamp. Both are very secure.

I use a screw type clamp for my BlackRapid strap, while I use a lever clamp on my ball head.

Why did go with screw type vs clamp? I just liked that the screw type can't accidentally release. Is there a danger of me not screwing it tight enough? Sure, but I'm not worried about that at all. I am far more concerned about a lever being accidentally snagged and released.

This can happen with a RRS clamp but not with an Acratech clamp. The Acratech has a lock that must be released before you can open the clamp.

The RRS lever has a two-step release - half-way and the plate can be slid, but not fall free, finish flipping it the full 180 and the clamp pops right out. Between the re-curve on the lever and this, I've never had problems with any of mine.

Good to know Jon. I'm a user and didn't know this.
