I currently have a 40D and i am looking to upgrade and keep my 40D as backup.

Originally i was comparing the 7D mark i and the 70D and decided on the 70D, but I just realized I can get a 5D mark ii used for about the same price as a refurb 70D. SO i primarily shoot on location portraiture, but also enjoy shooting wildlife, and have been getting into landscapes. Then obviously day to day family and friends stuff. I have been starting to take my photography more serious and getting some good paid gigs. So with that info, what camera would you guys recommend?

Oh an also i really love the video features of the 70D, and would really like to dive into some video as well.

Thank you for any suggestions

Sounds like the 70D will be more of a choice for you. A direct upgrade from the 40D....not to mention a pretty huge jump in terms of features and high iso performance.

The 5D2mk2 will be opening another set of windows for you. Esp, portraiture and landscape. This window may or may not be ideal for you as focal length will take a set back in wildlife.

So, my 2 cents are, for a safer bet, 70D. For a more challenging upgrade, the 5D2.

Heya,

70D seems like the way to go for you based on needs.

The 5D2 doesn't really offer much if anything over it IQ wise, ISO wise, and offers nothing features wise.

If you wanted to focus on portraiture, and wanted to the thinnest depth of field possible on 35mm format, and the best affordable ISO performance from a full frame, then the 6D would make more sense than the 5D2 at that price range.

But if you're wanting to do wildlife, landscape, portrait, etc, the 70D makes tons of sense.

Very best,

OK that's what I was thinking as well, I think I just scared myself a bit, I watched a Tony Northrup youtube video on the 70D and he absolutely loved it, but he also mentioned that the image quality and high ISO performance of a used 5D mark ii would blow away a 70D for portraiture. If its not that big of a gap I will go with the 70D.

Here is the video if any of you are interested in viewing it.

High ISO performance will be a bit better on the 5D2, but it's not that big of a gap, and you don't shoot portraits at high ISO. The 70D also has so many new features that at just doesn't make much sense to get a 5D2 now. The 70D will be vastly superior for wildlife photos, no contest. The used 7D would be the better dedicated wildlife camera, but it is inferior to the 70D for pretty much every other application, especially portraiture, lower-light shooting and landscapes.

70D as ISO 100 with the 85mm f/1.8 lens is a great portrait setup.
