This post and the reference to gonzogolf is dead on the money. What I thought was diffusion at one time to what it really is was way off. I took some lighting courses, followed the flash forums, studied Neil van Niekerk and realized it is simple physics and there are no magic bullets. The manufacturers and resellers of gimmick diffusers make lot a of money off magic bullets. Not saying the flashes bounce card is a gimmick. It is a just a tool with a specific job.

Yep. Too much mystery :) Diffuser and reflections are the same in a way that they must increase the size of the light source. Usually with a diffuser the light is spread is more even light over the modified itself, which can make it "kind of" bigger ;) and the hotspot is better controlled.

From another thread, an effective diffuser for flash:

With this, you don't need a wall to soften light, but you may need a sherpa. :)

But this effectively increases the size of the light source, which is rhe key to softness

Absolutely, and a graphic rebuttal to the flash-mounted modifiers that are supposed to soften the light. There is no bypassing the laws of physics.

bannedPermanent ban

Which is exactly why a bit of imagination, a 3"x5" index card, and a rubber band are much more useful than the Stofen and Gary Fong type wastes of money. The sad thing is that those devices actually work to a degree. Their downside is that you need more available power to use them, and they consume way too much battery power. Well, that and they completely stifle any creativity by fostering reliance.
