I dropped my kit lens, and ever since... I feel like the images have been exceptionally soft.

Does this look normal to everyone else for this lens? I know it's not the best quality lens, but I feel like it should be sharper than this.

This was taken f/11 @ ISO 100 1/125s.

100% crop on an area of the photo...

Well at first glance that looks like a problem. When I think the kit lens is not doing so well I set the camera to Av of f8, which should be the sweet spot of this lens, and snap a test shot or three. I have lots of great picture from this lens. But I do try to keep it at 6.7-11.

Looks like something's wrong. It should produce very decent images at f/11.

Well... dropping it certainly isn't the best way to calibrate it! :)

PS: I'll sell you mine for the right price. ;)

The focus appears to be off. Perhaps you can try a focus test.

There are many examples of good images that can be taken with the kit lens, here are two that I just found:

looks a bit soft.... also could be the atmoshpheric haze at that location.

Maybe dropping it was the best thing that could've happen to it. Now you have an excuse to buy a better lense. Start w/ the thrifty fifty at $70 you can't go wrong and built up from there.

Hope you can post some shots using the test chart, or at least of another location. Try some shots at F8 as suggested. I'm sure we all want to know how your kit lens fares.
I agree there might be some atmospheric haze - is it close to the sea, and was there any wind?

Stuff that is a long way away is not always the best way to test a lens.

Test it on something closer. 2-4 metres is a fair distance for sharpness tests

If in doubt, I shut up...
