Just bought a Tamron 150-600mm super-tele on the forum.

(EDIT: You CAN remove the foot! Read down in the thread)
As it turns out, the foot is not removable by the user. With the foot on, it barely jams into a Thinktank 75 popdown lens bag. The length is fine, it's the circumference that is a *very* tight fit.

But then I put an arca-swiss style lens plate on the foot, and no-go at all. I did manage to keep from dropping the lens on the first outing, but I'm at a loss here. I've invested some time, trouble, and $ in a think tank waist bag and belt and modular components, but they don't seem to have what I need for this lens. Don't want a backpack. What I'd like is the 75 pop-down made just a little wider!

Any suggestions, especially for a case that would work with my TT gear? Anybody modified a TT lens bag in this situation?

It looks like 11" h x 6" w would accommodate the lens with foot, plate, and hood attached & reversed.

A little less than 6" w if the case was square instead of round.

Doesn't seem that Think Tank or Lowepro cover this size with lens cases?

Lowepro makes a case that fits perfectly. its the 13x32cm case which is 7.9x7.1x14 inches.

Lowepro lists the inside dimensions of that case as 5.12x5.12 inches and 12.6 high.

I wonder if the foot + plate fits into the corner of the case, freeing up a little room. Is this a combo you've used?

Thanks!

Edit:
Oh yeah, now I see the Tammy in your signature... I guess I'm looking for a lowepro case. It fits on think tank belts?

OK, now I see the numerous reviewers on Amazon & B&H saying this is the case for the 150-600.

Grumble grumble (think tank) grumble grumble.

Thanks!

Not sure if it will fit a think tank belt. I use it for storage sometimes is all. Fits perfect with hood reversed. I usually have the Tammy on my 7d in a lowepro flipeside 500. Fits in there with a grip on and hood in shooting position.
The 13x32 is a nice case, well padded and well made, fits like it was made just for the Tammy.

think tank belts can work on lowepro, but the reverse is not true. The lowepro bag will work with the 150-600, I still use the bag on a 200/2. Fantastic bag. You can make it fit the think tank with some rope, but wont be very good. The lowepro belt has potential to be great, however, the belt buckle is highly flawed. I replaced mine with an airplane belt buckle, works fantastic, super solid.

Purchased the Lowepro 13x32 lens pouch today at my local pro shop.

The lens, with attached reversed lens hood, tripod ring and beefy RRS lens plate fits easily but not too loosely in the LP 13x32 - just like Dave & Charlie said.

The LP case easily attaches securely to the belt section of my TT Speed Freak hip bag, and to a TT full belt as well. It doesn't lock into place left/right unless you snake one of the case's smaller nylon straps through the TT small slots. It all seems really secure either way.

While at the shop, I learned the trick of removing the tripod ring from this lens. (I would have eventually read the manual!)

With the ring off, the lens with hood attached/reversed fits very well in a Think Tank 75 v2 "Pop down" bag with it popped down. Good when I know I'll be shooting handheld. This lens is a kick handheld in daylight.

Thanks for the help!

Mine goes in a Lowepro Flipside 200!
Granted it's a tight fit but the case has some mileage and is flexible enough to hold the Tammy (with the body attached), a flash and a second lens (mostly a 24-105mm). The goody bag (batteries, mem-cards, writing stuff, ...) is snuggly placed on the side to leave enough room for the big lens. The lens hood is (of course) reversed on the lens).
Good luck.

Greetings from Ghent,

Alain

I understand your problem with this, i searched for a very long time for the solution myself. The ONLY bag that i found that suited me was the TAMRAC 612. I found on used on B&H and it does a perfect job for my 150-600, 18-250, 100 Macro and 50mm. If you're patient, you can probably find one and you won't regret waiting.

OK, I am officially an idiot. I have an older version of this bag!

A couple years ago it got demoted to storage of misc junk on the shelf, but you're right - the length is perfect. More recently, I've been focused on my belt and belt pack systems, but as a shoulder bag the Tamrac works great.

Thanks Tom! I've gone from 0 to 3 ways to carry this:

Think Tank 75 v2 "Pop down" bag with it popped down holds the lens & hood without ring, attaches to TT belt or belt pack.

Lowepro 13x32 case has the best padding, holds the lens/hood *with* ring and plate, attaches to belt or pack

And the Tamrac 612 has room to hold the camera with lens attached, shoulder bag. Haven't used it yet, but looks very useful and quite simple in and out of the car, carrying, and shooting. A good bag to work out of.

I also had the older version and sold it. I regretted it as soon as i did and finally found another one. I've always used Tamrac bags, for my use they are the ONLY bag out there!
