This time of year I go to our local wastewater treatment ponds every chance I get to see and learn shorebirds. Recently I was circling a dike when I came upon this Merlin. It just sat there and let me observe and then take pictures. Probably a rest and eat stop during migration. There are always lots of Killdeer to get a quick snack.

Yes, Protohistorian, I had circled the dike once without the Merlin. On the second circle, I came around the corner and this fellow was just there. A nice surprise for sure.
