Chinese, Japanese...what is the difference?!
German, Russian...what is the difference?!
Italian, Irish...what is the difference?!
Alabama, Minnesota...what is the difference?!
Canon, Nikon...what is the difference?!
Sigma, Canon lens...what is the difference?!
Yungnao, Canon flash...what is the difference?!
Male, Female...what is the difference?!
France, Belgium...what is the difference?!

We dismiss too readily what we fail to understand adequately, but it DOES matter in many cases and we should not be so tongue in cheek about it.

Just saw the digitalrev review on YouTube, the Japanse guy says the only downside is that it's not bokehlicious.
I thought the 50mm gave quite a beter bokeh than a 35mm. Can anyone show comparison pics with for example 50L, is this one's so much smoother or is the Japanese guy nitpicking?

What do you you think looks better?

That's all that matters here.

Very best,

Not all lenses have the same sharpness (look at sharpness tests), even at same aperture. If the Canon isn't quite as sharp, it could potentially have more areas that are softer (and lend themselves to judging bokeh). As to which of these two lenses to get: the Sigma is a better value and is sharper. I've liked most the Canon L lenses I've used based on overall sharpness (IE not the sharpest, but sharp enough), their color cast, and quality of bokeh. So fifferent strokes for different folks, and there's not one answer.

I like the naturalness of the 50L. I like the affordableness of the 50A.

Will do. Just thought I'd give the short geography lesson for the benefit of others that might be reading and aren't in the know. I do sometimes find it surprising how many folks in the world don't try to learn much about other parts...not knowing where Hong Kong is is not the worst offense I've seen.

George Bush asking Charlotte Church where in England Wales was is my fav, she's quite a punchy character so she did well to bite her tongue.

As for Kai, I didn't know he was from Norfolk, not exactly the most metropolitan place in the UK, a Hong Kong accent is easier to understand than a Norfolk one!

Well "bokeh" is a subjective term. The Sigma is sharper, but bokeh is relational to the absence of sharpness. Since the Canon can have a larger aperture, I could see why it would be more "bokehlicious"

larger may not always be more bokehlicious. Hard edges in bokeh cause a more busy effect. A comparison like the tamron 24-70 vs canon 24-70 mk 1 clearly shows this.

the 50L does not have the best bokeh IMO, owned a few of them, but what I like about it is the T stop is very good. It lives very close to the T1.2 by my estimation. Consistently exposing 2/3 faster than my FE 55 1.8, which have very little light loss if any.

Bokeh is a function of the design of the lens, and a lot of lens features that are good for making a lens sharp and accurate in focus can be bad for bokeh. Specifically, aspherical lens elements and floating lens groups often make for hard-edge blur disks, which make for busy bokeh.

Yes! Yes! Yes!

Many photo magazine editors would have you believe it's a simple function of the number of diaphragm blades. More blades = better bokeh. The lens manufacturers don't say this specifically, but they don't go out of their way to correct the misconception either. A good circular diaphragm is only partially necessary but definitely not sufficient for "good bokeh." There are many other optical factors that contribute to it.

I wouldn't buy a lens on bokeh comparison alone. Just saying.
