On the 20D you can set the camera such that while using flash and AV mode, the shutter speed is a constant 250th. I have poured through the manual on this new complex machinery and it doesn't seem possible...is this accurate?

I know, I will use manual, but I kinda liked that setting.

looking through the menu, I can't find a flash sync shutter speed function either. I guess you have to be in manual for that.

I've seen this asked before. IIRC, the 1D doesn't have this feature. As you surmised, you have to switch to M mode.

It would kinda make Av not Av anymore, wouldn't it ;) Use M or P (which uses 1/60s as minimum)

yeah, I guess if you want to set the aperature and the shutter speed with a flash, that is manual.

It doesnt make sense to. AV is suppose to change the shutter speed based on the aperature. If you're setting both then it's not really AV now is it?

Ditto...

With that CF enabled on a 20D you are not shooting AV anymore,. you are shooting manual exposure with the shutter fixed at 250.

The setting on the 20D is completely counter intuitive to what AV means.. and thus it's absence is not a fault on the 1D.

Down with Canon flash metering in Av anyway.

Thank gosh my 1-DII does not have this feature. Keeps me away from Av.
I despise Av using Canon flash metering, disabled it on my 20D, and rarely do any Canon fill flash in Av because Canon E-TTL/II flash metering assumes all Av flash metered exposures want to ambient expose the background, having the camera default to too slow a sync speed.

Av flash algorithms are only useful from a tripod, or in bright outdoor light for modest fill (and not there much either).

Canon flash in M is better. M is pure. M is simple. M is the user in control.
M together with FEC and FEL is consistent results.

Boy am I ranting off on a tirade. Sorry. I shot an indoor flash event last night and am reminded of the dark art of Canon flash.

Jack

Yes Av is for fill flash only, not designed for flash to be the primary light source. Use M to control the synch speed.

That's not entirely true. I distinctively remember seeing you shoot inside a car with an elk......:confused::confused:
