Looks like stink bugs? Maybe that's why I haven't been seeing many monarchs lately. For the last 5-6 years, we have been invaded by stink bugs. Never even heard of them before that.

With the elongated body, not to mention what is happening to the caterpillar, I'd guess assassin bugs.

I think assassin/stink bugs come under the same classification, & they've reduced my crop of caterpillars from 8 to 7. I watched this one for over a week & am guessing that he was about to form a chrysalis. It's disappointing, but life goes on.

They are both in the 'true bug' family, but stink bugs dine on fruits/veggies/plant matter, while assassin bugs kill other insects, like your caterpillar.
