Hi everyone, I previously only use my smart phone for pictures (iPhone 6 Plus). My last camera was a Fuji x100s that I loved. I no longer have that but am really interested in getting a dedicated camera again. Everywhere I read seems to recommend the RX100. It looks like an awesome camera but I have a few questions.

1. Can anyone provide a link that outlines the differences between the 4 generations? I'm trying to see if I should just get the first gen or if there are any added features that would make the other gens a good buy.

2. How are these cameras at motion? That is one big area where smart phone cameras are lagging. My iPhone does pretty well but I have a 2 year old so I need better. The Fuji I had claims to have the best shutter lag (.01 seconds) so how is the Sony compared to that?

3. How is the RX100 in low light compared to the competition?

4. Anything else you'd like to share about the RX100 or the competition?

Thanks all!

I have had most dslr canon crop cameras over the last 10 yrs. currently I own a Fuji x100s, Sony rx100 v1, and just picked up a Sony rx10. Your old Fuji will give you the best color and low light performance package, but as you know focus is pretty slow. I found no need to upgrade my rx100 v1 as it does what I want. Off the top of
My head the follow on versions have a upgraded processer, tilt screen and pop up view finder. They also probably have wifi. You can look it up, I'm currently traveling and only have my phone or I would do it. If your looking into more motion stuff, likeyour child, I would look into a Sony a6000, extremely fast focusing. Since
My kids just graduated college and
Don't play much sports, I sold my dslr stuff and have what I have stated above. Pure JPEG image quality I found nothing like the
Fuji. Portability Sony rx100, I would
Look into a used Sony a6000, but then you need
Lenses, or a used rx100 vr iii or 4

RX100 II
Upgraded BSI sensor
same lens as original (28-100mm (equiv), f/1.8-4.9)
Added hot-shoe that can take external flash or optional EVF
Tilt screen LCD
Added Wifi

RX100 III
Same BSI sensor as MII
New lens; 24-70mm (equiv.), F/1.8-2.8
No more hot-shoe
Built in EVF

RX100 IV
New sensor with built-in DRAM
Faster shutter speed (1/32000s)
4K video
Hi speed video (up to 960fps)
Better auto-focus

I personally own the original and III versions, and I definitely prefer the III. The main difference for me is the viewfinder, which is huge when taking pictures in bright sunlight (the LCD becomes almost unreadable). The lens has a little less zoom range, but is quite a bit faster at the long end (f/2.8 vs. f/4.9), and the video quality is better.
The IV looks like a huge upgrade; the new sensor design allows much faster readouts. Not only does this allow the super fast electronic shutter speed, and the high-speed video, but also helps the auto-focus speed and tracking, and reduces (or eliminates) the rolling-shutter effect in video.

dpreview has pretty thorough reviews of the different versions:

It really comes down to a cost vs. features trade-off. The only one I would skip is the II; the only reason I can see to choose it is if you want to use an external flash, otherwise it doesn't add much over the I (for me), and the III is a better choice. The IV is awesome if you have the money (I would get one if I didn't already have the III)

I have a rx100 II that i pickup refrub and i enjoyed it alot until i got a sony a6000 used for around the same $400.
I would have to say that for me the a6000 is a better buy.
1) Value for money
2) Ability to interchange lens (you could mount cheap vintage lens and get amazing images)
3) larger lcd
4)image quality
5) easier menu
Down side its larger than the rx100

My bad, I thought they got rid of it when they added the hot-shoe.
Edited my previous post to remove incorrect info
