I was wondering if I mounted another ETTL flash to the hot shoe if that will also fire the 430ex off camera or will only the pop up flash do it.

I believe the YN-565 and 568s will do that. In Canon, you to go to the 550EX, 580EX, 580EX II, or maybe the 600. The YN-622 system does it too, at less cost than a new flash, and with more versatility and control. WARNING: I often dispense advice in fields I know little about!
