Just ordered a new San Disk Extreme Plus 80MB/s HC1 class 10 card for my 60D. When in video mode and I hit the record button, the camera records for about 3 seconds. A little bar on the far right on the LCD screen shows up, maxes out and then I get the message (Movie recording has been stopped automatically). I feel this card is more than capable of recording HD movies with this camera. I did research on it before I bought this card and was told it would work no problem by several people. So I tried this, I went to firmware update which on my camera is version 1.1.1 I click on firmware update and then I get a message saying (Memory card containing firmware is required to update and then a OK at the bottom of the screen. I am completely confused on what's going on here. Update of some sort is required I'm guessing. I'd appreciate any feedback and help. Thanks.

Mike

You may have gotten a bad card. Have you tried a different card?

the card works fine with pictures etc. Yes tried another card and that didn't work either. I'm going to try and re install the firmware 1.1.1 and see what happens.

well updating the existing firmware 1.1.1 didn't fix the problem.

Yeah, try firmware. Another video function with DSLRs is compression method. Canon now has a IPB, which was introduced with the 5D3/1DX. The 60D apparently doesn't have that. It uses IPP. I'd be sure to make sure the intended resolution is what you're after, and also make sure you format the card in the camera (to be sure it will be native format).

yup, I've done all that. Even trying 640x480 and still got the error. Also have tried reformatting. Looks like I'll be sending my canon 60D off to canon repair.

A simple card test:

ISO 100, f/1000, lens wide open, lens cap on, camera set to LRAW, and high-speed burst mode. Hold down the shutter button until you hit the buffer. That will write a lot more data to your card a lot faster than HD video does. You should get about 16 shots before you hit the buffer. If the card can handle that, it is not the card, or the card sub-system. This is not definitive, but it can eliminate the card as the issue.

You had a thread about this same issue just last week (https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1439057) and I had suggested a specific Sandisk from Best Buy, at the time on sale. Is that what you got and where did you get it?

What was the actual source (eBay, Amazon, B&H, Adorama, etc) for your card? There are many counterfeit cards in the market place so you need to know the reliability of the source. The practice of counterfeiting cards, especially Sandisk, is actually documented on eBay (http://www.ebay.com …/10000000001567660/g.html (external link)) and I think Amazon!

My own personal feeling is Best Buy is a good source. Virtually every week something is on sale but more importantly the parent corporation buys thousands of cards direct from the importer and then they are passed down to the individual stores as needed for retail sales.

Format the card in the camera, then

Try clearing out (i.e. resetting to the defaults) the custom functions, then

Make sure the battery is totally charged.

It's probably not an SD card related issue.

Well it is said that up to 1/3 of the Sandisk cards in the marketplace are fake, hence why I asked about the source. Many fake cards are relabeled slower cards and doing video pushes the limits.

You are correct. I have been reading about people who have had similar problems with the 60D and at least half traced it to the SD card. So I guessed wrong!

tried that, and I got about 10 shots just before it started to buffer or slow down. Any other ideas?

The last 18 months I've been having problems with SanDisk SD cards. Cards bought in Australia and Thailand. The cards are fine for stills but stop recording at around 1:30 minutes. Two bought in Australia, one from Thailand. All three have the same problem.

I won't even look at them any more. No problems with Transcend, Lexar and Kingston.

You purchased online from Amazon so all I can say with some level of confidence is the picture looks good. Amazon is not necessarily a good source. It can be, if you know what to look for, but you can also easily end up with a fake card.

Do you live in the States where you have access to a Best Buy?
