Eyepiece with iris to shut out light

Im tired of using gaffers tape to cover my eyepiece when shooting long exposures in bright light. Is there an eyepiece that comes with a mechanical iris or flap that closes shut. I use the 5D Mark II. And no I don't want to use the black rubber widget that comes with Canon's camera strap.

Personally I just throw a lens cloth over the back of the camera. I have looked for something similar and haven't seen anything either. Personally I think the eyepiece extender should have an iris build into it. I'd be more than willing to pay a bit extra.

Look around for a press on black plastic cap from some container. The one I use, not sure what it came from, is about 1½ inches in diameter and ½ inch in depth. It nicely "hangs" over the eyepiece. As long as you block the direct entry of light you've taken care of most of the problem of leakage.

I think you can get a little plastic solid plate that will slide into place over the viewfinder eye piece. I've yet to find one for my cameras though.

So I use a cloth or even a hat.

I put the one that comes with the camera on a piece of velcro. That way it sticks to the camera bag and doesn't get lost between uses. You can find the rolls at most home improvement store that have one side the stick to and the other the sticky so it makes handy loops. Great for securing wires and stuff when its windy to avoid shakes too.

These are shooting glasses but they do make an adjustable Iris to attach to glasses, they are very good I used to have one when pistols were allowed in the UK, cheap they are not.
I will be surprised if there is not a US manufacturer of a similar product but I have never come across one on this side of the pond

What's wrong with gaffer tape as a solution? There is apparently not enough demand for an add-on eyepiece shutter for an aftermarket product to show up after more than a decade of Canon dSLR. You could take an ordinary right angle finder

Canon straps have an attached rubber eye-piece cover on them. You attach it to the eyepiece like so:

one thing i liked about my 1D is it had a little lever to activate a shutter for the ovf!

You can cut the rubber shroud around the eyepiece to size and attach the diaphragm in that space while using the leftover circular rubber to fill in around the iris.

This is what I use as well.

Strange isn't it, my old Canon FD mount cameras included a little eyepiece shutter but despite all the bells and whistles on the modern DLSRs this is missing and you are stuck with the rubber thing. (Perhaps the pro bodies include one).

My 1D Mark II has it, I would imagine the 1 series still does.

It's one of those little things that I really wish they'd offer on more models.
