I have a problem with Lightroom putting a lighter colored box on the preview screen. I have had the problem since version 5. Now using the latest version from the cloud. Attached is a picture of the offending area. This also occurs on my laptop. Have been using both Windows 7 and 10.

Odd.

Any plugins?

My guess would be a possible issue with your video drivers. I would suggest updating/reinstalling your video drivers in the first instance.

Video drivers all up to date on desktop, probably not on the old laptop. Could be a plug in causing the problem. The ones I have are from Scott Kelby. I suspect they would be very common.

Problem is still persisting on both my laptop and desktop computers. I can't be the only one?

I don't use Lightroom much, but I seem to recall that there is a facility in LR to apply a customized identity plate (or whatever it is called) that gets displayed up in that general area. Have you attempted to do this at some point? If so, maybe it is causing UI rendering issues?

Just throwing that out there.

I notice that you've selected "Fit" in the window size (top left of the screen on the navigator panel) what happens when you choose fill?

On my version when I choose Fit I do see a border top, bottom and sides with the top and bottom being about half of the side dimensions. However when I change from Fit to Fill all of the available screen spaced is utilised.

I'm casting my vote for this. Especially because it moved to another computer. Though it's location seems more like the File Info box is messing up. If you press "i" multiple times does it come and go?

I went searching and it really seems to be a "file info" problem. Here's a thread of screenshots that look a lot like yours. No resolution though. vmad

Good news is if you don't need to see the file info pressing "i" should get rid of the problem.

Has this persisted across multiple versions of LR? I couldn't quite figure that out from the initial post. If not I would initially suspect Video drivers, or a hardware problem in the video card, but it seems to be the same across two different computers. Did you by any chance install LR on to both computers from the same download file? Because my next suspicion would be that you used a slightly corrupted download to get the same error on to both computers. The customisable nameplate is not normally shown in that location. The nameplate is at the very top, in the left hand corner, where you can change the Lr "icon" and replace the version name with custom text. I keep intending to make an icon in the LR colours, with my initials to use up there. What I would suspect, and that is composed of a transparent text box is the information display. In this case you seem to just have the file name on display. The Information section though can consist of up to three lines of text. The top one in that large font size, and the other two in a font size that is about 1/3 smaller. You can cycle through three options for the information using the I key, there are two different sets of information shown and off. If you are in the Library module and right click (Opt click? in OSX) and select view options at the bottom on the options list you can change the information that is included in Info1 and Info2 in the Loupe tab. I would suggest changing these to see what effect that has on the problem.

The problem has persisted over different versions of LR and two computers. I use the cloud version of LR and PS on both computers now. Clicking i does make the problem go away.

Thanks everyone for looking into this confounding problem.
