These are my last ditch effort to photograph a Hummingbird this summer. I've seen plenty of them, just never the right conditions or time of day. This young male Ruby throat had staked his claim to this part of the garden so I stood nearby for about an hour and a half and watched him feed and take his breaks in the shade in a nearby tree. He was pretty feisty for a youngster, no other Hummingbirds were allowed in "his" garden.

Those are beautiful! Haven't had a chance to do them this year since there have been so few. I'm seeing a few migrants now, but none are hanging around.

Very nice, Steve, and I can't even get one on one of the plastic flowers on my feeder... heheh
I would've thought that was a female Ruby-throated, I don't know my hummingbirds. :)

Thanks. We should have them here for another month or so, they're bulking up for the long trip south.

Thanks Randy. The young males look a lot like the females. You can't see it in these but on this bird's left cheek is a bright ruby feather that makes the ID easier. I have a shot that I'll post soon that shows it. He never left my sight while I was there so I know a female didn't sneak in.

Really like the more natural shots of HB's. I can only get feeder shots mostly. Great shooting as always Steve!

Thanks Robert and Trevor.

Robert, if you hang some flower baskets near your feeders you'll have a nice natural looking outdoor studio. Just make sure your backgrounds are pleasing and the light is favorable on the plants. My back yard has become too shady for shooting anymore, I used to have a nice blind and perches back there that worked really well.
