Although taken earlier this Spring, I just now got around to doing something with this one. First shot of a Male Painted Bunting I have gotten a chance at. These birds are as unreal as they look, I hope to shoot another some day this close. :)

Thank you, Robert, John, and Peter, and Cole, I really appreciate it. :)
This shot posted on here doesn't look as good as it does on Flickr, which is pretty strange... heheh

Thank you, Charles, they are not thick around here, but I have seen several, usually far away though. Yeah, I was lucky with this shot to be that close, I feel lucky. heheh

That's a really unique image, Randy! Unlike any PB photo I've ever seen.

Yeah, I think all serious bird photographers know about Painted Buntings, but most of us have never seen one because of their very limited distribution within the US. I live in Washington state, 'way up near the British Columbia border....yet I have had the unlikely opportunity to see a painted bunting in June of 2012 because a male wandered thousands of miles from his usual home range. I think it is the only time in recorded history that a PB was ever seen in WA state. Dozens, if not hundreds, of birders were fortunate enough to see it, as news of the bird spread rapidly due to list-serve birding sites. The fact that it stayed in the area for at least a few weeks really helped, too.

Unfortunately, it never came near the road, and no one was allowed to get closer due to the fact that it was on fenced private property.....so as far as I know no truly good photos were ever taken.

Most folks who want to photograph a Painted Bunting travel to Texas to do so, and usually do so as part of a bird photography workshop.

"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".
