That's a really unique image, Randy! Unlike any PB photo I've ever seen.

Yeah, I think all serious bird photographers know about Painted Buntings, but most of us have never seen one because of their very limited distribution within the US. I live in Washington state, 'way up near the British Columbia border....yet I have had the unlikely opportunity to see a painted bunting in June of 2012 because a male wandered thousands of miles from his usual home range. I think it is the only time in recorded history that a PB was ever seen in WA state. Dozens, if not hundreds, of birders were fortunate enough to see it, as news of the bird spread rapidly due to list-serve birding sites. The fact that it stayed in the area for at least a few weeks really helped, too.

Unfortunately, it never came near the road, and no one was allowed to get closer due to the fact that it was on fenced private property.....so as far as I know no truly good photos were ever taken.

Most folks who want to photograph a Painted Bunting travel to Texas to do so, and usually do so as part of a bird photography workshop.

Thanks for the nice words, Tom!

I figured that most knew about them, but like me, maybe they didn't know how far up they are. I definitely agree about some (any species) that wander far off course, in my area close to Dallas, in Texas there were TWO separate Snowy Owls back in 2012(?) that were here at the same time, one West Of Dallas, the other, East. (Approximately 45 miles apart) So I know there are going to be stragglers, I just don't see many of them. heheh I have shot two Long-tailed Ducks, and right now there is a Red Phalarope and a Ruddy Turnstone at a local lake, so we get our visitors from afar from time to time too. :) (I haven't tried to get shots of the last two though)

Too bad that you didn't get some good shots off at the Bunting, but I know that happens, if it's scared away then nobody can see it.

Really I posted the map because since I had no idea myself how far they went up, I figured I wouldn't be the only one, and I live where they are... heheh

Thanks again, Tom!
