Greetings, although it looks like I'm a Newbie, I have been a member for quite sometime but had email trouble so had to start over.

Need some opinions - I'll be traveling through Europe next month and have choices of carrying my bag of T3i along with assorted lenses (see gear list) or just carrying my G16. The trip is for leisure and the wife and I love to collect, resize and frame our trip photos. So what would you do?

Thank you for any response.

Tough call. Most of the time I use my little Sony RX100-v1 for trips, but for big trips I sometimes take a full frame camera and wide lens. Wide and flash are the things I miss with little cameras, even the awesome RX100. Big cameras are a pain though - you have to carry them, put them in the safe, and probably back up images. You know, I actually get some great travel photos with my phone, Samsung S4 - the best camera is the one you have on you.

If taking photos is really key then I think the T3 is worth taking, but limit yourself to a really wide and a standard lens. You can almost always stand closer, but it's often difficult to stand back.

Hey, I'd say it's "normal" to take a good compact when travelling, in fact, I've printed, framed and hung various pics from old (low-resolution) compacts. And I gather that the G15 is pretty awesome as a compact.

But, needless to say, you have to consider the trade-offs, if you have bought into good quality DSLR stuff. Are you out for "serious" photography? Well, as you say, the trip is for "leisure", OK, just be prepared to not get the "greatest shots from Europe", but you can still do quite well!

A while ago I bought a G series for travel. Was disappointed. Now I travel with a 5DIII and a 24-105 lens and I am rarely disappointed. A little heavier etc. but well worth it IMHO.

I know a great photographer who traveled Europe with just the RX100, his photos are awesome.

The answer depends on where you are going and what you like to photograph. I have been to Europe and was happy with a T2i and the kit 18-55IS lens. Everything that I wanted to photograph was outside when I Went to Oslo, and the combination was light and compact. Rome really needs an ultrawide, and the T3i and 10-22'should be fine.
Personally, I am not happy with a lens the size and weight of the 24-70F2.8, and would want IS on a travel lens.
My wife is fine with the s110 I got for her. Only you can say if you would rather take the T3i or G16. On my recent trip to England, I took a full frame 6D, 17-40, and 35F2IS. I like the fast prime for indoor photos in museums and general use. A 50 is too narrow on a crop for places like Rome.
Where are you going? A 24-70 would be fine for Paris, if you are OK with the size and weight. F2.8 will help indoors, but IS is really good at St Chapelle.

Not directly related to photography, but to the question: Right now, Europe is in chaos because of the migration/refugee situation. Many of the transportation nodes (trains especially) are overwhelmed with humanity on the move. A couple of considerations - (1) Crime. I have no idea what will develop on this front, but I would guess there may be opportunists out there who would take advantage of the confusion (and diversion of law enforcement) to grab valuable items. The bigger your camera (and assorted lenses/accessories), the more appealing a target. (2) Stuff. You might want to pack and travel light to be as flexible as possible, and have less gear/luggage when on the move. If faced with an unexpected need to move right away, the lighter your packing, the faster you can react.

Just a couple of thoughts . . .

A compact camera is lightweight, small and easy to carry, but they usually fail to have a very WA capability...about 28mm FF equivalent is the widest you generally find in a compact, and that is not wide enough, I find, for shooting in the relatively cramped spaces in European towns. I am frustrated unless I have 24mm FF equivalent AOV capability with me.

Heya,

T3i + 10-22 would be what I'd use, assuming you want to keep and use what you have. I wouldn't even take another lens.

Personally, the EOS-M (1) and 22mm F2 pancake is my go-to travel kit. But I think it wouldn't be wide enough for UK and I'd probably just attach my 10-22 to it with an adapter!

Very best,

Very best,

I took my 60D and the pancake on my trip last summer and there were many moments were I wish I had something wider in addition, but the weight was great.

I would take the T3i, the ultrawide and the 50 (for when you want faster glass). That's still a relatively small and light combo that will fit into a compact bag. You probably wouldn't notice too much difference in IQ for shots taken in good light, but as soon as you are talking interiors, the T3i should give you cleaner images, all else being equal.

Now, being me, I would also take the G16, for those times when you just want a pocket camera. Mine is a RX100, and it comes in handy when travelling, and takes up very little room.

Cheers, Damien

Good question I´m interested in the answer as well. Haven´t really noticed much chaos on the trains back from work. Wierd considering as I live in Germany and the town I live in has the counties biggest refugee sorting "depot".
