I have taken several video's of an event that I would like to put together as one "montage" video. I am looking for the following in my software search:

- free or as cost effective as possible (This is likely to be a one time deal. I will invest more in software if needs continue)
- be able to trim my existing clips
- be able to put all my clips in order of liking
- be able to apply nice, but simple transitions such as fade out or fade in. nothing fancy. (including no transition in some parts)
- be able to add audio and control audio from video clips or audio files of my choosing
- be able to output all of this without loss of quality captured from Canon 70d
- not a deal breaker, but perhaps even be able to apply a color grading (or cinematic look style) as part of post processing
- final output to not degrade original image, in fact, should be same or sharper

I am using Windows 8 with an i5, 16GB Ram and a GeForce GTX 960 with 4GB Ram

My files were captured
- .MOV
- MPEG-4 ACV/H.264 compression
- 30 fps
- 1920x1080 IPB
- I used a flat picture style but not a CINESTYLE mode (I often saw this suggested in several of my findings during my research)
for the adj, I changed the sharpness down a couple, then contrast all the way down.

My final version is one to be put on DVD or to even convert for video on Youtube or even Facebook.

I am a very technical person..I have used Movie Maker, AVIDEMUX, ADUBVIDEO, even Blender at one time...however, I wanted to see what tools I should use for my above project.

Sounds like you are looking for something pretty basic. While I prefer older versions of iMovie for my Mac (I even downgraded my OS to get back to it), on your PC try the Sony Vegas platform. Get Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum Production Suite 11. About $40 at Amazon. Works w Windows 8.

Save your money. Blender has a video editing module that is very good. It should easily handle what you want to do. I've worked with both Blender and Adobe Premier Pro and can tell you that I was very impressed with Blender.

Here's a link to the first of a series of tutorials that will walk you through all aspects of the video edltor.
